Chapter 9 - The Unbroken Circle

By dawn, the Moretti estate had been completely cleansed of the artificial white roses, the fraudulent contracts, and the heavy, suffocating shadows that had poisoned the halls for three years.
The snow outside was melting under the first warm rays of a spring sun, turning the Hudson Valley landscape into a brilliant, glistening expanse of green and silver.
Inside the private family library—away from the grand ballroom, away from the corporate ledgers and the syndicate ledgers—Vincent and Sofia sat together on the old leather sofa near the unlit fireplace.
The cracked blue phone rested on the coffee table between them, its screen dark and silent, its work finished.
Sofia leaned her head against Vincent’s broad shoulder, her eyes closed, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat against her cheek.
“You didn't have to break up a wedding to find me, Vince,” she murmured, a faint, tired smile touching her lips. “I was already planning my own exit strategy from Lake George. I just needed one more document from Bellamy’s safe to finish the federal case.”
“I know,” Vincent whispered, his fingers gently tangling in her silver-streaked hair. “But I wasn't going to let you fight them alone for one more second. When I thought I had lost you... I realized that an empire without you isn't an empire at all. It’s just a cage made of stone.”
Sofia turned her head, kissing the warm skin of his palm. “And what about Isabella?”
“Isabella is currently on a greyhound bus heading south with forty dollars in her pocket and zero access to her brother’s accounts,” Vincent replied, his voice flat and cold. “She won't be bothering us again.”

“Good,” Sofia whispered.
She sat up, looking around the familiar room—the leather books, the mahogany shelves, the heavy Persian rugs. It was her home. Not because of the name on the gate, or the money in the banks, but because the foundation beneath it had finally been cleared of every lie.
