Chapter 3 - The Architecture of the Frame

By 1:30 a.m., the master library on the third floor of the Cassan estate had been transformed into an active forensic command post.
A massive fire crackled in the eight-foot limestone hearth, throwing warm golden light across the floor-to-ceiling walnut bookcases and the forty-foot drafting table where Alaric’s grandfather had mapped the maritime trade routes of the Atlantic half a century earlier.
Lily was fast asleep on an oversized emerald velvet chaise lounge near the hearth, wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket, her breathing deep, even, and untroubled under the watchful care of Mrs. Alvarez, the estate’s head housekeeper.
I sat in an oversized leather armchair, my cracked rib wrapped in a low-profile medical compression brace applied by Dr. Sterling, who had also treated the severe hematomas on my wrists and shoulders with therapeutic anti-inflammatory salves. I wore a tailored charcoal wool cardigan and soft linen trousers provided by the household staff, drinking hot chamomile tea from a porcelain cup.
Across from me sat Arthur Ross and Chief Forensic Auditor David Sterling, surrounded by forty banker's boxes of unsealed corporate manifests, building inspection logs, and decrypted Cayman wire transfers.
Alaric stood behind his desk in an unbuttoned black dress shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his muscular forearms, reviewing high-resolution digital scans on the eighty-inch wall monitor.
"Let’s review the execution of the embezzlement frame, David," Alaric commanded, his voice slicing through the room with freezing clinical clarity.
David Sterling tapped his digital stylus against the screen, illuminating an intricate corporate transaction diagram:
THE PORT OF BALTIMORE MARITIME INFRASTRUCTURE AUDIT (2024)
TARGET: CLARA VANCE (CHIEF INTERNAL AUDITOR)
FABRICATED CHARGE: $2,100,000.00 WIRE TRANSFER TO UNLISTED CAYMAN ACCOUNT
FORENSIC DISCOVERY: IP ADDRESS ROUTED THROUGH MERRITT CALLAWAY’S RESIDENTIAL WORKSTATION
PRIMARY BENEFICIARY: APEX HARBOR REDEVELOPMENT LLC (CONTROLLED BY JULIAN STERLING).
"The theft Clara was accused of was engineered entirely by her husband," David Sterling revealed, his jaw tightening in disgust. "Two years ago, Clara discovered that Merritt Callaway was accepting bribes from Apex Harbor Redevelopment to falsify environmental and structural safety inspection reports on Berths 3 through 9."
"Julian Sterling’s syndicate," Arthur Ross noted, his voice grim.
"Yes," David confirmed. "Julian Sterling needed those inspection reports cleared so he could force a state condemnation auction on the fifty-million-dollar container terminals. When Clara refused to sign the fraudulent environmental variances, Merritt used her digital credentials while she was asleep to execute the two-million-dollar offshore transfer. He then offered her a 'deal': plead guilty to misdemeanor administrative negligence, surrender her forensic auditing license, and allow him to manage her domestic finances in exchange for keeping her out of state prison."
Tears of boundless, burning rage spilled over my cheeks.
For twenty-four months, I had lived in a private prison of guilt and terror. I had believed I was a failure who had ruined my father’s name. I had allowed Merritt to take my passport, my bank accounts, my car keys, and my dignity—believing that he was the only thing standing between me and a ten-year federal sentence.
"He destroyed my life," I whispered, my voice breaking. "He made me believe I was crazy. He told me that if I ever spoke to an attorney, the state would take Lily away because I was a convicted felon."
Alaric walked around the desk.
He stopped twelve inches in front of my chair, slowly lowering himself onto one knee onto the Persian rug until his slate-gray eyes were level with mine.

He reached out, his warm, scarred fingers gently wiping the tears from my cheekbones.
"Merritt Callaway didn't just frame you, Clara," Alaric whispered softly, each word carrying the unyielding weight of an iron anchor. "He took the woman I was born to protect and made her bleed in the dark. But the masquerade is over. Tomorrow morning, Baltimore will see the 'quiet hero of the harbor' for the monster he truly is."
