Chapter 6 - The Restitution of the Name

By Saturday afternoon, the dark, oppressive tension that had surrounded our lives had completely dissolved beneath the brilliant autumn sunshine of the Chesapeake bluffs.
The cramped, terrifying townhouse in Canton—where Merritt had kept Lily and me under digital surveillance for two years—was permanently emptied, its contents auctioned off with all proceeds directed to local women's shelters.
The grand south residential pavilion of the Cassan estate—a sprawling, six-bedroom private wing overlooking the private yacht slips and the blue waters of the bay—had been completely renovated into an expansive, sunlit sanctuary for Clara and Lily.
I walked onto the wide stone terrace wearing an elegant cream cashmere sweater and tailored trousers, holding a warm cup of Earl Grey tea.
Sitting on a soft woolen rug beneath the shade of ancient weeping willows, playing with a set of hand-carved wooden sailboats, was four-year-old Lily. She was laughing as her plush lamb sat perched on the miniature deck of the largest boat, sailing across the grass.
Alaric Cassan walked onto the stone terrace, dressed in a comfortable dark linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, carrying two crystal glasses of fresh lemonade.
He walked over to where I stood, resting his large, warm hand over mine on the stone balustrade, looking into my eyes with deep, unreserved reverence.
"The Maryland Court of Appeals formally unsealed the Clara Vance exoneration decree at noon today, Clara," Alaric said softly, his slate-gray eyes warm with unshakeable peace. "Your forensic accounting license has been reinstated with the highest state honors, your credit completely cleared, and the state has issued a formal public apology for the 2024 indictment."
Tears of profound, sacred vindication welled in my eyes as I looked at the man who had torn down his own city's political establishment to protect my child and me.
"You gave my father back his honor, Alaric," I whispered, resting my hand over his.

"You gave me back my life, Clara," Alaric answered, bringing my fingers to his lips and kissing them with boundless tenderness. "You and Lily gave this house a future."
Lily came running across the flagstones, her steps light, fast, and completely fearless, throwing her arms around both of our legs with a joyful laugh that echoed across the bay like music.
