Chapter 6 - The Restitution of the Estate

By Wednesday afternoon, the dark, oppressive tension that had surrounded our lives had completely dissolved beneath the brilliant autumn sunshine of Long Island.

The windowless laundry room—where Mia and I had spent ninety days hiding behind the steam presses—had been permanently decommissioned and transformed into a sunlit, flower-filled conservatory and indoor play garden for the estate's staff families.

The grand south residential pavilion of the Duca estate—a sprawling, six-bedroom private wing overlooking the rose gardens and the blue waters of Long Island Sound—had been completely renovated into an expansive, peaceful sanctuary for Elena and Mia.

I walked onto the wide stone terrace wearing an elegant cream cashmere sweater and tailored trousers, holding a warm cup of Earl Grey tea.

Sitting on a plush wool blanket beneath the shade of ancient weeping willows, playing with a set of wooden building blocks, was nine-month-old Mia. She was laughing as she stacked two blocks together, her chubby legs kicking with boundless, joyful energy.

Alessandro Duca walked onto the stone terrace, dressed in a comfortable dark linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, carrying two crystal glasses of fresh raspberry lemonade.

He walked over to where I stood, resting his large, warm hand over mine on the stone balustrade, looking into my eyes with deep, unreserved reverence.

"The federal court formally unsealed the David Vance memorial exoneration at noon today, Elena," Alessandro said softly, his slate-gray eyes warm with unshakeable peace. "His name has been permanently cleared, his engineering patents restored, and the state has awarded his estate full restitution."

Tears of profound, sacred joy welled in my eyes as I looked at the man who had torn down his own family's corruption to protect my child.

"You gave my husband back his honor, Alessandro," I whispered, resting my hand over his.

"You gave me back my soul, Elena," Alessandro answered, bringing my fingers to his lips and kissing them with boundless tenderness. "You and Mia gave this house a future."

Mia let out a joyful squeal from the blanket, pulling herself up onto her feet using a low stone garden bench, wobbling with proud, fearless balance before taking two unassisted, wobbly baby steps toward us.

Alessandro didn't hesitate.

The most feared don in New York dropped to his knees on the flagstones, opening his massive arms as Mia tumbled straight into his chest with a bubbling laugh, her small hands clutching his collar as he scooped her high into the morning air.
