Chapter 2 - The Stolen Formula

The air in the private examination suite went dead cold.

Dr. Pendelton, an older man with silver-rimmed spectacles and thirty years of hospital administrative service, glanced nervously between Leon's titanium drive and Julian's suddenly rigid posture.

"Dr. Mercer," Pendelton said, his voice hesitant. "You stated during the emergency board hearing that Miss Lin's vehicle was completely incinerated at the base of the Route 9 embankment."

"It was an estimate, Arthur," Julian said quickly, his voice tightening as his eyes remained locked on Leon. "The police report indicated extensive thermal damage. Whatever is on that drive is likely corrupted or irrelevant to the clinical audit."

"It's not corrupted, Julian," Clara spoke up, stepping out from behind Leon's shoulder.

Though her body trembled from the fever, her voice was crystal clear, cutting through the sterile room with the absolute authority of a lead research scientist.

"The dashcam on my sedan was tied to the Lin Foundation's encrypted telemetry server," Clara said, leaning against the examination table for support. "It recorded the black Lincoln Navigator with no front plates that nudged my rear bumper twice on the icy curve. It recorded the driver who stepped out of that SUV while I was trapped in the driver's seat—your private laboratory technician, Marcus Cole."

Julian’s hands clenched into fists inside his coat pockets. "Delirium. She's suffering from acute post-traumatic hallucinations, Arthur. We must initiate the medical hold immediately."

The two private security guards took a step forward, reaching for their duty belts.

Leon didn't reach for a weapon. He didn't raise his voice. He reached into his leather jacket, pulled out his phone, and tapped the screen once.

The audio speaker of the room's wall-mounted digital communication console crackled to life, broadcasting a live, encrypted direct link to the Chief of Police for the City of Boston and the Senior Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Healthcare Fraud Task Force.

"Chief Miller, Agent Callahan," Leon spoke into his phone, his eyes never leaving Julian. "You are listening to Dr. Julian Mercer attempting to unlawfully detain Dr. Clara Lin after tampering with her personal vehicle and falsifying hospital research logs."

A deep, authoritative voice boomed through the speaker: “We have the location secured, Mr. Vance. Tactical units and state investigators are entering the main hospital lobby right now. Nobody leaves Room 412.”

Julian backed away half a step, his breath catching in his throat.

The polished, untouchable researcher who had spent two years manipulating the Lin Institute's board of directors suddenly looked like a trapped rat staring down the barrel of an open furnace.

"Clara," Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a sickening mixture of panic and desperate manipulation. "Think about your grandfather's legacy. If you bring the federal authorities into this institute, the stock will crater fifty percent. The pediatric trials will be suspended by the FDA! Hundreds of sick children will lose their treatment!"

"The children are already losing their treatment, Julian," Clara said, tears of profound rage finally spilling down her cheeks. "Because the synthetic peptide vials you shipped to the trial wards yesterday didn't contain my grandfather's formula. You replaced the active peptide with saline so you could smuggle the real compound to your offshore buyers in Zurich."

Julian went completely white.

The double doors of the corridor flew open, and four federal marshals with carbines drawn stepped across the threshold, their gold badges gleaming in the clinical green light.
