Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Ledger

By two o'clock that afternoon, the private laboratories on the fifth floor of the Lin Biomedical Tower were placed under direct federal quarantine.

Clara sat at her primary research workstation, wearing her white laboratory coat over her dark suit. An intravenous saline drip was secured to the back of her left hand, gently running fluids to combat her lingering dehydration and fever under the watchful eye of a trusted hospital physician.

Leon sat on the stool beside her, carefully reviewing the physical chemical manifests retrieved from Julian's private safe in the executive suite.

"Look at this batch record from October 14th, Clara," Leon said, pointing a finger at a highlighted column of serial numbers. "Julian didn't just substitute the clinical trial medication. He was testing the real synthetic peptide on non-consenting private patients at his clinic in Brookline."

Clara leaned over the microscope, examining a high-resolution cellular slide. Her eyes widened with cold horror.

"The peptide synthesis requires a precise cryogenic stabilization process at minus eighty degrees Celsius," Clara explained, her fingers trembling against the focus knob. "Julian didn't have the commercial cryogenic freezers at his private clinic. The compound degraded into a toxic protein aggregate within forty-eight hours of room-temperature exposure."

"Meaning?" Leon asked, his jaw tightening.

"Meaning that anyone he injected with that degraded batch didn't receive cancer therapy," Clara whispered, looking up with tears in her eyes. "They received an acute nephrotoxic agent that causes rapid renal failure."

The laboratory doors hissed open.

Dr. Sarah Lin, Clara’s cousin and the chief toxicologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, rushed inside holding a stack of red-flagged medical emergency reports.

"Clara! Leon!" Sarah gasped, her face pale with dread. "We just received an emergency alert from the Boston Children's Hospital oncology ward. Four pediatric patients from the Brookline trial group were admitted two hours ago with acute, unexplained kidney failure. Their families were told by Julian's staff that the reaction was an unpredictable side effect of your original formula!"

Clara stood up so fast her IV line pulled taut against the pole.

"They're framing the toxicity on my grandfather's design," Clara said, her voice dropping into a register of terrifying, lethal focus. "Julian knew the degraded compound would cause organ failure. He planned to blame the fatalities on my laboratory logs to force the FDA to shut down my research entirely."

Leon stood beside her, his hands resting on her shoulders with unyielding, protective strength. "How do we reverse the toxicity, Clara?"

"I have the molecular antidote," Clara replied, moving toward the secure cryogenic vault at the rear of the laboratory. "My grandfather designed a secondary binding peptide specifically to neutralize protein aggregation in case of laboratory accidents. We have twenty liters of the base compound stored in Vault 4."

She turned to Leon, her hazel eyes blazing with fierce, unbreakable resolve.

"We have to synthesize four hundred pediatric doses before six o'clock tonight, Leon. If we don't get this antidote to Children's Hospital, those four kids won't survive the night."

Leon rolled up his sleeves, his gray eyes locked onto hers with absolute devotion. "Show me what to mix, Clara. We're not letting anyone die on your watch."
