Chapter 2 - The Five-Minute Countdown

"Nothing," Evelyn choked out, shoving the folded napkin beneath the rim of a clean service plate. "Just wiping a spill."

"Clear Table Four’s dessert plates right now," Gilbert snapped, his eyes darting toward the VIP section. "And keep your hands steady. If you cause a scene in front of Moretti, I’ll personally throw you off the loading dock."

Evelyn didn't answer. She grabbed a small silver tray, placed the napkin neatly beside a fresh dessert spoon, and forced her legs to move. Every step toward Table Four felt like walking across a bed of hot coals. The air around Lorenzo Moretti carried an invisible, suffocating gravity.

She reached the table just as Celeste leaned in, whispering something sugary into Lorenzo’s ear while resting her manicured hand over his. The diamond on her ring flashed beneath the shattered-ice chandelier.

"Excuse me," Evelyn whispered, her voice barely louder than a dying breath.

She began clearing the empty crystal plates. As her hand dipped near Lorenzo’s right elbow, she slid the folded cocktail napkin off the tray, letting it drop soundlessly next to his bread plate, right over the crimson wine stain she had spilled earlier.

Lorenzo didn't look at her. His gaze remained locked on Celeste. But his index finger twitched. A fraction of an inch.

"More champagne?" Celeste asked, her voice chiming like church bells.

"Not just yet, tesoro," Lorenzo replied. His voice was a low, smooth baritone that somehow managed to drop the temperature in the entire room by ten degrees.

Evelyn turned to step away, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. Read it, she chanted silently in her head. Please, just look down and read it.

8:53. Two minutes.

As Evelyn retreated toward the service station, she risked one glance back. Lorenzo’s hand had left the linen. His fingers brushed against the folded white paper. He didn't pick it up immediately. Instead, his dark eyes shifted sideways, tracking Evelyn’s movement across the room with a terrifying, predatory curiosity. He unfolded the napkin with agonizing slowness.

His eyes scanned the scrawled ink.

At that exact second, the color in Lorenzo’s face didn't drain—it hardened. The relaxed, untouchable mob boss vanished, replaced by an apex predator assessing an incoming ambush. His dark gaze snapped from the napkin to Celeste, who was currently laughing at a joke made by her brother across the table.

Celeste checked her diamond watch. 8:54.

Her shoulders tightened. Her smile didn't reach her eyes. She reached for her beaded clutch again.

Lorenzo moved with terrifying, blinding speed. In one fluid motion, he caught Celeste’s wrist before her fingers could pop the clasp of her bag. The emerald satin fabric strained against her arm as he yanked her forward across the table, the wineglasses rattling violently against the silver.

"L-Lorenzo?" Celeste stammered, her honey-blonde composure shattering into jagged shards of pure terror. "What are you—let go of me, you're hurting me!"

The surrounding lieutenants surged to their feet, their chairs scraping loudly against the marble floor, hands sliding instinctively inside their suit jackets toward concealed shoulder holsters. The entire restaurant froze. Laughter died in throats. Forks stopped midway to mouths.

"Where are the cleaners stationed, Celeste?" Lorenzo asked. His voice wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. It cut through the terrified silence like a scalpel.

"I—I don't know what you're talking about!" she shrieked, struggling against his iron grip. "Are you insane? Everyone is looking at us!"

"Let her go, Moretti!" Celeste’s brother bellowed, drawing a heavy revolver from his waistband.

Before the muzzle could even clear leather, Lorenzo’s closest enforcer—a hulking mountain of a man named Viktor—snapped his own weapon up and fired. A deafening, thunderous crack echoed through the Obsidian.
