Chapter 4 - Captive of the Syndicate

Inside the roaring, bullet-riddled cabin of the SUV, the atmosphere was suffocating. Celeste was sobbing hysterically in the corner seat, her emerald satin dress stained with the blood of her fallen brother, her mascara running down her pale cheeks in black streaks.

"You ruined everything!" Celeste screamed, lunging forward toward the front seat, her fingernails clawing at Lorenzo’s seatback. "My family is going to flay you alive! You think you've won? They'll hunt you down to the ends of the earth!"

Lorenzo didn't even turn around. Without looking back, he raised his left hand, grabbed Celeste by the hair with casual brutality, and shoved her back against the leather upholstery.

"Shut your mouth, Celeste," Lorenzo said softly, his voice carrying a quiet, lethal menace that immediately silenced her frantic shrieks. "Your father traded you to me for a shipping monopoly, and you traded me to the Outfit for a knife in the back. The debt is settled. But you’ll live long enough to watch your family's empire burn to ash before I decide what to do with you."

Evelyn sat frozen in the opposite corner of the spacious back seat, her arms wrapped tightly around her trembling body. She stared straight ahead, terrified to breathe, terrified to move, terrified that the moment Lorenzo remembered she was in the car, he would pull the trigger and throw her body into the Chicago River.

The SUV tore through the midnight streets, weaving aggressively through traffic before plunging down an unmarked ramp into a subterranean parking garage beneath an imposing, fortress-like limestone mansion on the North Side.

The vehicle screeched to a halt. Armed guards clad in black tactical gear instantly swarmed the perimeter, opening the doors with military precision.

"Get her out," Lorenzo ordered, pointing a nod at Celeste. Two guards hauled the screaming, kicking heiress out of the vehicle, dragging her toward a set of heavy iron doors leading down into the estate's subterranean holding cells.

When Lorenzo turned his dark, piercing eyes toward Evelyn, her heart dropped into her stomach.

"You," he said, stepping out of the SUV and holding out a hand to help her down.

Evelyn shrank back against the seat. "Please... please just let me go. I won't tell anyone. I swear on my life! I'll leave Chicago tonight, I'll change my name, just don't kill me!"

May you like

Lorenzo stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. The harsh fluorescent lights of the garage cast sharp shadows across his carved jawline. Slowly, a strange, grim expression touched the corners of his mouth—not a smile, but an acknowledgment of a debt incurred.

"If I wanted you dead, Evelyn Carter, you would have stayed on the floor of the Obsidian," Lorenzo said, his voice lowering as he read the name tag still pinned to her blood-spattered uniform shirt. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers wrapping firmly around her trembling wrist, and pulled her gently out of the car. "You saved my life tonight. In my world, that is a currency more valuable than all of Celeste Vane's blood money combined."
