Chapter 2 - The Reading of the Ledger

By 8:30 p.m., the master residential suite on the second floor of the Viscari manor had been placed under absolute armed containment.
Elena Bennett sat in a high-backed velvet armchair near the limestone hearth, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket Mrs. Alvarez had brought from the master linen reserves. Dr. Robert Sterling, the family’s private surgeon, had finished applying butterfly closures to her lip and stabilizing her cracked fourth rib with a low-profile compression brace.
Sophie sat on the floor between Elena’s feet, eating a warm bowl of chicken soup, her white rabbit patched with fresh, clean stitches applied by Dr. Sterling’s surgical kit.
Alessandro sat across the table, having unbuttoned his black cuffs, holding the silver falcon bracelet in his left hand.
Beside him stood Arthur Ross—seventy-four years old, senior managing partner of Ross & Sterling International Legal, the supreme corporate litigator who had represented the Viscari family for four decades—holding an unsealed, red-tabbed leather portfolio stamped with the seal of the Delaware Chancery Court.
"Tell me about the missing manifests, Elena," Alessandro commanded gently.
Elena swallowed, her fingers tightening around the warm porcelain mug of herbal tea in her lap.
"Three days ago, while I was sorting the laundry from the guest suites," Elena began, her voice steadying despite the lingering tremor in her chest, "I found a leather-bound USB drive inside the lining of Mr. Rizzo's laundry bag. It contained the complete digital telemetry and bill-of-lading logs for the Port of Newark container terminal."
Arthur Ross leaned forward, adjusting his wire-rimmed spectacles. "The deepwater berths?"
"Yes," Elena said, looking directly at Alessandro. "Over the past fourteen months, eighty-five million dollars in pharmaceutical and luxury automotive shipments have been diverted through an unlisted private equity shell called Apex Sovereign Maritime LLC in Grand Cayman."
Arthur Ross tapped his wireless stylus against his tablet, displaying the encrypted transaction nodes on the screen:
APEX SOVEREIGN MARITIME LLC (GRAND CAYMAN)
AUTHORIZED FIDUCIARY: DAMIEN RIZZO (40% CONTROLLING EQUITY)
SILENT PARTNER: JULIAN STERLING (60% MEZZANINE DEBT UNDERWRITING)
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: LIQUIDATE VISCARI HOLDINGS UPON DANTE VISCARI'S EXPIRATION.
"Damien Rizzo wasn't just stealing cargo, Alessandro," Arthur Ross revealed, his jaw tightening into iron. "He was engineering a total syndicate takeover. Look at the succession rider filed with the probate court three weeks ago."
Arthur slid an unsealed parchment across the mahogany wood.
"Under Clause Nine of the proposed restructuring agreement," Arthur explained, "in the event of any violent confrontation, internal assassination, or fatal health crisis involving Alessandro Viscari, full sovereign command of the eighty deepwater berths transfers automatically to the Senior Deputy: Damien Rizzo."
"And the reason they attacked Elena tonight?" Alessandro asked, his slate-gray eyes flashing with cold, lethal authority.
"Elena refused to surrender the USB drive," Arthur said. "Damien and his bodyguard cornered her in the laundry facility to force her to hand over the hardware before your evening council meeting began. When Sophie walked into the conference room, Damien realized his thirty-year deception had just been exposed by a three-year-old child."
Alessandro looked down at the silver falcon bracelet resting on the table.
The man who had stood beside his father’s grave, the deputy who had sworn blood loyalty on an iron cross, had spent fourteen months preparing to murder him from within his own house.
"Arthur," Alessandro spoke into the quiet room.

"Yes, Alessandro?"
"Draft the emergency receivership petitions against Apex Sovereign Maritime at dawn. Call Special Agent Sarah Lin of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. And bring Damien Rizzo to the wine cellar."
