Chapter 6 - The Restitution of the Estate

By Saturday afternoon, the dark, oppressive tension that had surrounded our lives had completely dissolved beneath the bright autumn sunshine of Long Island.

The basement laundry room—where Elena had been attacked in the dark—had been permanently decommissioned and transformed into a bright, sunlit children's art studio and community library for estate staff families.

The entire south residential pavilion of the Viscari estate—a sprawling, six-bedroom private wing overlooking the rose gardens and the Long Island Sound—had been completely renovated into an expansive, peaceful sanctuary for Elena and Sophie.

Elena walked onto the wide stone terrace wearing an elegant cream cashmere sweater and tailored trousers, holding a warm cup of herbal tea.

Sitting on a soft woolen rug beneath the shade of ancient weeping willows, playing with a hand-carved wooden dollhouse, was three-year-old Sophie. She was laughing as her white rabbit sat perched on the miniature balcony, overlooking the green lawn.

Alessandro Viscari walked onto the terrace, dressed in a comfortable dark linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, carrying two crystal glasses of fresh raspberry lemonade.

He walked over to where Elena stood, resting his large, warm hand over hers on the stone balustrade, looking into her eyes with deep, unreserved reverence.

"The federal court formally unsealed the final restitution decree at noon today, Elena," Alessandro said softly, his slate-gray eyes warm with unshakeable peace. "Your family's name has been permanently cleared, and your authority over the foundation is absolute."

Tears of profound, sacred joy welled in Elena’s eyes as she looked at the man who had torn down his own inner circle to protect her child.

"You gave me back my dignity, Alessandro," Elena whispered, resting her hand over his.

"You gave me back my soul, Elena," Alessandro answered, bringing her fingers to his lips and kissing them with boundless tenderness. "You and Sophie gave this house a future."

Sophie came running across the flagstones, her steps light, fast, and completely fearless, throwing her arms around both of our legs with a joyful laugh that echoed across the bay like music.
