Chapter 6 - The Purge of the Vance Syndicate

By noon that day, the grand ballroom of the Boston Maritime Exchange was sealed under emergency executive order.
The extraordinary plenary assembly of the North Atlantic Shipping Council had been convened by federal prosecutors and the Massachusetts Port Authority.
Marcus Vance—the fifty-eight-year-old billionaire chairman of Vance Maritime Holdings—sat at the head of the long oak table, surrounded by twelve high-priced corporate defense litigators.
He was holding a leather-bound corporate charter, attempting to project the untouchable confidence of an aristocratic dynasty, but the presence of forty armed federal marshals encircling the perimeter of the room made his hands twitch nervously against his portfolio.
The double mahogany entrance doors swung open with concussive force.
Leo Costello strode into the hall.
He wore an impeccably tailored navy three-piece power suit, his presence commanding immediate, breathless silence across the room.
Walking beside him was I.
I was no longer wearing the faded office blouse. I wore an elegant, tailored emerald wool power suit, my dark hair styled in a chic, professional chignon, carrying a sleek leather briefcase containing the forensic digital logs of Bay 14.
Behind us walked Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcus Reed and Detective Raymond Callahan.
Marcus Vance jumped to his feet, slamming his palm onto the polished wood. "Costello! What is the meaning of this federal circus? You have disrupted our commercial export operations at Pier 6!"
Leo walked to the center of the room, stopping directly opposite Vance.
"Your export operations are terminated, Marcus," Leo said, his baritone slicing through the hall like a tempered blade.
I opened my briefcase, placing four thick volumes of certified federal forensic reports onto the center of the table with a heavy, final thud.
"Under emergency seizure warrants authorized by United States District Judge Evelyn Montgomery at dawn," I announced, looking Marcus Vance dead in the eye, "Vance Maritime Holdings is under federal indictment for Interstate Weapons Trafficking, Corporate Money Laundering, and Conspiracy to Defraud the United States Government."
I connected my tablet to the seventy-foot wall display.
The massive screens illuminated instantly, displaying the decrypted banking flowcharts connecting Vance’s offshore accounts in Cyprus to forty-two million dollars in illegal weapons transfers, followed by Richard Davies’s unedited, sworn video confession.
The room erupted into furious, panicked shouts. Directors pushed their chairs back in open horror, stepping away from Marcus Vance as if he were carrying a lethal contagion.
Marcus Vance’s face turned an ashen shade of chalk. He backed against the panoramic window, his hands trembling violently. "This... this is an extortion plot! You fabricated these manifests!"
May you like
"The manifests were verified by the Department of Defense ninety minutes ago, Marcus," Leo said softly, stepping closer until he stood inches from Vance’s trembling frame. "You tried to use my docks for your black-market empire. You tried to ruin an innocent woman's life to cover your tracks. Your name is erased from this harbor forever."
Four federal marshals stepped forward, clicking heavy steel transport chains around Marcus Vance’s wrists and ankles, dragging the disgraced titan from his own boardroom as the entire assembly watched in stunned, condemning silence.
