Chapter 5 - The Counter-Offensive

The clock on my taskbar ticked steadily past 2:15 PM.
I didn't waste time celebrating. Surviving the term sheet was only step one; now I had to secure our operational independence before Julian could marshal his venture capital allies to retaliate.
My phone buzzed on the wooden desk, displaying a caller ID I hadn't expected to see: Sarah Jenkins, General Counsel, Sterling & Vance Legal.
Sarah was an old college acquaintance who specialized in independent tech acquisitions and whistleblower protection law. In my previous life, she had tried to warn me about Julian’s offshore maneuvers six months too late, after I had already signed away my voting rights.
I swiped to answer, keeping my voice calm and professional. "Sarah. To what do I owe the pleasure on a Tuesday afternoon?"
"Liam, I'm glad I caught you," Sarah’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and urgent. "I just got an informal call from a contact at Apex Horizon Capital. They're screaming about an unexecuted Series A term sheet collapse, and more importantly... they're claiming that CognitiveMesh utilizes patented neural-mapping architecture owned by a shell company called Vance Global LLC."
A cold smile touched my lips. "Of course they are. Julian is trying to claim proprietary infringement to freeze our operational assets."
"It gets worse," Sarah warned, her tone dropping into a serious register. "They've filed an emergency ex-parte motion for a temporary restraining order in federal district court, alleging that you stole their core source code while acting as an employee of a separate holding entity. If the judge grants the TRO tomorrow morning, federal marshals will seize your servers before you can deploy your beta launch."
I didn't panic. The panic belonged to the old timeline.
"Let them file, Sarah," I said smoothly. "Do you have your calendar open?"
"I'm looking at it," she replied, sounding slightly confused by my lack of alarm. "Why?"
"Because instead of defending against a fraudulent TRO, we are going to walk into federal court tomorrow morning with a preemptive federal declaratory judgment and a counter-suit for commercial extortion, securities fraud, and tortious interference," I said, opening a secure folder on my desktop containing three gigabytes of forensic audit trails.
Silence stretched across the phone line for three seconds.
"Liam..." Sarah murmured, a breath of profound professional respect escaping her lips. "Are you telling me you already have the evidence?"
"I have every email, every forged signature, every unauthorized wire transfer receipt from Julian’s offshore poker accounts, and a complete forensic paper trail proving that Vance Global LLC was incorporated using embezzled seed capital from our corporate accounts," I stated, my voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable certainty. "Meet me at my office in forty minutes. We're going to draft a federal bomb that will blow Apex Horizon out of the water."
"I'll be there in thirty," Sarah said, and the line clicked dead.
I locked my workstation, stood up, and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window. The Chicago sun was beginning its slow descent, casting long, dramatic shadows across the concrete canyons of the Loop.

Julian thought he was the apex predator. He thought he could break me with lawyers, courts, and corporate traps.
He didn't realize that I had spent years studying every single claw he possessed, and I was ready to rip them out one by one.
