Chapter 8 - The Clean Slate

By Friday afternoon, the fallout at Apex Horizon Capital had reached apocalyptic proportions.
The venture capital firm’s primary institutional backers, horrified by the federal grand jury referral and the public exposure of their predatory shell company tactics, officially severed all ties with Julian Cross, forcing him out as managing partner and freezing his personal accounts.
In our office downtown, the atmosphere was the exact opposite.
The cloud-computing servers were humming with steady, uninterrupted power. Our engineering team was expanding, our beta waiting list had cleared forty million dollars in projected annual recurring revenue, and the office was filled with the bright, energetic hum of real, honest work.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window of my corner office, holding a mug of black coffee, watching the Friday afternoon traffic crawl down the canyon of concrete below.
The glass door clicked open, and Chloe poked her head in, smiling warmly.
"Liam? You have a visitor in the lobby. He says he's a representative from a Tier-1 venture fund out of San Francisco—Silicon Valley Ventures—and he insists on scheduling a meeting to discuss a clean, standard, non-predatory Series A investment."
I couldn't help the small, triumphant smile that tugged at the corner of my mouth.
"Tell him we're fully bootstrapped for the next twelve months, Chloe," I replied smoothly. "And if he wants to talk terms, he can send his legal team our standard founder-protection rider before we even schedule a phone call."
Chloe laughed, shaking her head. "You got it, boss."
She closed the door, leaving me alone once more with the Chicago skyline.

I walked over to my desk, picked up a pen, and traced my fingers across the clean, blank sheet of paper lying in my notebook. No traps. No hidden clauses. No predatory riders waiting to devour my life's work.
The past was a ghost that could no longer touch me. I had survived the ambush, outsmarted the predator, and secured my own sovereign horizon.
