Chapter 8 - The Velvet Trap Snaps

The blue and red lights painted the facade of 414 Elmridge Way in frantic, swirling strokes.

Three patrol cruisers were already parked at wild angles on the lawn, their engines rumbling, doors open. Two uniformed officers were standing by the front porch, where Rebecca sat on the steps, wrapped in a yellow emergency shock blanket provided by the first responders. A paramedic was kneeling beside her, applying gauze to her bleeding forearm.

Rebecca was putting on an Oscar-worthy performance. She was rocking back and forth, weeping uncontrollably, burying her face in her blood-stained sleeve while two neighbors watched in horror from across the street.

"She just snapped," Rebecca sobbed to Officer Higgins, a young patrolman who looked completely overwhelmed. "I asked her to clean up her room, and she... she threw the lamp at me! She grabbed a shard and lunged! I tried to protect my son! Where is my son? Is Tyler safe?"

Tyler was standing twenty feet away, near the garage, flanked by another officer. He looked like a ghost, his arms wrapped around himself, his face gray.

I pulled my car up to the curb, Sarah parking directly behind me.

The moment my car door slammed, Rebecca saw me. She let out a wailing cry and threw herself off the porch steps, stumbling toward me wrapped in her yellow foil blanket.

"David! Oh, thank God you're home!" she cried, reaching for me with her bandaged arm. "It was horrible! Mia... she lost her mind! She tried to kill me, David! She cut me! The police have to take her! We can't keep her here, she’s insane!"

I didn't catch her.

I stepped smoothly to the side, letting her momentum carry her forward until Officer Higgins had to catch her by the elbows to keep her from falling face-first onto the asphalt.

Rebecca blinked, stunned by my lack of reaction. "David?"

A fourth cruiser pulled up to the curb without sirens. An unmarked black sedan. Detective Marcus Vance stepped out, wearing a plain brown leather jacket, his gold badge clipped to his belt. He didn't look at Rebecca. He looked directly at Sarah, who stepped out of her SUV carrying the ruggedized laptop under her arm.

"Officer Higgins," Detective Vance said, his voice carrying the authority of twenty years on the force. "Step away from the woman."

Higgins frowned. "Sir? She’s the victim. The minor is upstairs barricaded in the bedroom—"

"I said step away from her, Higgins," Vance repeated, his tone dropping an octave.

Rebecca’s theatrical tears stopped instantly. Her eyes darted from Vance to Sarah, then to me. A flicker of cold, primal dread passed across her features.

"What is this?" Rebecca demanded, her voice losing its trembling, fragile quality. "I am the one who called 911! My arm is bleeding! My husband's daughter attacked me!"

"Nobody attacked you, Rebecca," I said, my voice echoing across the silent street.

Sarah stepped forward, opened the laptop, and turned the screen toward Officer Higgins and the other two patrolmen.

"Footage is time-stamped twenty minutes ago," Sarah said, hitting the spacebar. "Recorded via encrypted cloud link from two separate angles inside the residence."

The audio blasted through the high-powered laptop speakers into the quiet night air.

*“Don't lie to me! You are an ungrateful, spiteful little orphan. Your father is sick of you. He can't stand looking at your face because all it does is remind him of a dead woman...”*

The neighbors gasped. Officer Higgins’ mouth fell open. The paramedic holding the roll of medical tape stopped, his hands frozen in mid-air.

On the screen, the crisp 4K video showed Rebecca smashing the ceramic lamp against the bedpost. It showed Mia sitting motionless on the floor, hands pinned to her denim skirt, crying silently. And then, in agonizing, high-definition clarity, it showed Rebecca taking the sharp ceramic shard and calmly, deliberately sawing it across her own forearm.

*“You're going to a cage, you little bitch.”*

The video ended.

Silence swallowed the front lawn. It was so complete that you could hear the distant hum of the highway three miles away.

Rebecca stood in the middle of the driveway, the yellow shock blanket slipping from her shoulders and pooling on the wet asphalt like melted wax. The color drained from her skin until she looked like a corpse.

"That's... that's an AI fake," Rebecca stammered, her voice shrill, cracking with panic. "David made that! He’s trying to frame me to get out of spousal support! Tyler! Tyler, tell them! Tell them how crazy Mia is! Tyler, tell the police right now!"

She spun around, lunging toward her twelve-year-old son.

Tyler didn't back down.

For the first time in his life, the boy stood with his spine straight. He pulled his hands from his pockets and looked his mother dead in the eyes.

"She didn't do it, Mom," Tyler said clearly, his voice carrying across the entire yard. "You did it. Just like you took the bracelet. Just like you hid the pencils. You made me lie to David."

"You little traitor!" Rebecca screamed, her mask shattering entirely, her face contorting into an expression of raw, feral hatred that made Officer Higgins instinctively draw his taser. "I brought you here! I did this for you, you ungrateful little bastard!"

"Rebecca Vance," Detective Vance said, stepping behind her and grabbing her wrists with practiced, brutal efficiency. The handcuffs clicked shut with two sharp, metallic snaps. "You are under arrest for filing a false police report, felony child endangerment, domestic abuse, and evidence fabrication."

"Get your hands off me!" she shrieked, thrashing against Vance’s grip as he marched her toward the back of his cruiser. "David, you spineless coward! You won't have a dime left! I'll take this house! I'll take everything Laura left you! You hear me? I’ll tear this family to pieces!"

"You already tried, Rebecca," I said, standing on the sidewalk as she was forced into the plastic back seat of the cruiser. "And you failed."

May you like

The cruiser door slammed shut, cutting off her screams behind reinforced plexiglass.
