Chapter 9 - The Anatomy of a Scavenger

The county courthouse in late November was a dreary cathedral of gray limestone and whistling drafts.

Two weeks had passed since the night the sirens lit up our front lawn. In those fourteen days, the carefully constructed world Rebecca had spun around us was dismantled with forensic precision by Sarah’s legal team and the county district attorney.

I sat in a small conference room on the third floor of the prosecutor's office, Sarah seated to my left, while Assistant District Attorney Karen Walsh laid out three thick binders on the conference table.

"It wasn't her first time, David," Walsh said, opening the first binder.

I looked at the documents. Mugshots, civil filings, and sealed family court records dating back eight years to Orange County, Florida.

"Her maiden name was Rebecca Thorne," Sarah explained, pointing to an older court record. "Her first husband, Tyler’s father, was indeed a violent man—we verified that. But what Tyler didn't know, because he was too young, was how Rebecca handled the exit. She deliberately provoked incidents, documented them with hidden audio recorders, and extorted a six-figure lump-sum settlement from the husband’s wealthy parents to avoid pressing criminal charges."

"She was a professional grifter," Walsh said bluntly. "She targeted men with assets, emotional vulnerabilities, and children. When she met you three years ago at that regional logistics conference, she ran a background check on your firm. She knew about Laura’s family trust within three months of your first date."

I leaned back in the vinyl chair, pressing the heels of my hands into my eyes. The sheer stupidity I felt was a physical weight crushing my lungs. "I gave her the keys to my house. I let her discipline my daughter."

"David, stop," Sarah said firmly, grabbing my forearm with a grip that reminded me so much of Laura it made my chest ache. "She is a clinical sociopath. She studied you. She found a grieving widower who was terrified of failing as a father and used your own decency as a crowbar to pry your life apart. You didn't fail Mia. You caught her before she could spring the final trap."

"What about Tyler?" I asked, looking up at Walsh. "What happens to him?"

Walsh sighed, closing the Florida binder. "Tyler’s biological father is currently incarcerated in federal prison for interstate drug trafficking. He has no parental rights. Rebecca is looking at three to five years on felony perjury, child neglect, and attempted grand larceny through fraud. Tyler is technically a ward of the state. Child Protective Services has already initiated paperwork for temporary foster placement."

The room went cold.

*Mom please stop. I don’t want the house. I want to go to Dad’s.*

I remembered the boy in the vinyl booth at the diner, his small hands shaking as he wept over cold pancakes, reciting lies he had been beaten into memorizing. I remembered him standing on our front lawn, defying the only parent he had ever known to protect my daughter.

"No," I said.

Sarah looked at me. "David, think carefully."

"I have thought about it," I said, looking at the assistant DA. "Tyler isn't going into the system. He protected Mia. He was abused, coerced, and terrified."

"You have no biological claim to him, Mr. Vance," Walsh warned gently. "Rebecca will contest any custodial interference from her cell, purely out of spite."

"Then let her contest it," I said, standing up and leaning over the table. "Sarah, you're the best estate and family lawyer in this county. How do we file for emergency kinship guardianship?"

A slow, fierce smile spread across Sarah’s face. "We file a petition under the Child In Need of Services act, citing extreme domestic coercion by the biological mother, and we petition for David to be named temporary legal custodian pending the termination of Rebecca’s parental rights."

"Can we win?" I asked.

May you like

"With the video footage we gave the grand jury?" Sarah snapped her briefcase shut with an authoritative click. "We won't just win, David. We’ll have temporary custody by five o'clock this afternoon."
