Chapter 6 - The Custody and Restitution Tribunal

At 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, the private family law amphitheater of the Bergen County Justice Center was convened for an emergency financial and protective hearing.
Judge Katherine Thornton sat at the elevated mahogany bench, her sharp, analytical eyes reviewing a nine-hundred-page forensic dossier submitted by my legal team.
Sitting at the defense table were Tyler Vance and Denise Vance, dressed in plain, rumpled department-store clothing, looking like weathered ghosts of the arrogant aristocrats who had swaggered around the Lake George firepit four days earlier. Their court-appointed defense attorneys sat with their heads bowed, unable to meet the judge’s piercing gaze.
Sitting at the plaintiff's table were myself and Arthur Ross.
Judge Thornton adjusted her reading glasses, looking down from the bench with cold, absolute severity.
"This court has reviewed the undisputed forensic accounting logs, the authenticated 4K video evidence provided by Kyle Vance, and the sworn depositions from the Adirondack Property Management Corporation," Judge Thornton announced, her voice echoing through the breathless chamber.
The judge looked directly at Tyler Vance.
"Mr. Vance, you systematically embezzled nearly half a million dollars from your spouse's ancestral trust, used those funds to finance luxury lifestyles for your extended family, and culminated your predatory entitlement by physically assaulting your wife in front of your cheering relatives."
Tyler slumped forward, burying his face in his trembling hands, tears of pure, unadulterated shame leaking through his fingers.
"Pursuant to the emergency petitions filed under the New Jersey Prevention of Domestic Violence Act and the Uniform Fraudulent Transfer Act," Judge Thornton continued, "this court hereby orders the immediate, permanent dissolution of the marital estate with zero alimony, zero property distribution, and zero spousal support allocated to Tyler Vance."
The judge paused, turning her gaze toward Denise Vance.
"Furthermore, regarding the four hundred and eighty thousand dollars in siphoned trust capital: an immediate judicial lien is hereby placed on all personal bank accounts, vehicles, and private assets held by Denise Vance and Richard Vance until full restitution, plus statutory interest, is repaid to the Sterling Foundation."
Judge Thornton struck her heavy wooden gavel with a sharp, resounding crack.
"And finally, an absolute, lifetime protective order is hereby entered against Tyler Vance, Denise Vance, and Kyle Vance, barring them from approaching within one thousand feet of Olivia Vance, her residences, or her corporate facilities under penalty of immediate felony incarceration."

Denise let out a dry, broken wail, clutching her chest as two county marshals stepped forward to escort the defendants back to the holding cells.
I stood up smoothly, buttoned my jacket, and walked down the center aisle of the courtroom with my head held high, stepping into the crisp autumn sunshine as a free, sovereign woman.
