Chapter 8 - The Trial of Tyler Vance

Six months later, the central ceremonial courtroom of the Warren County Supreme Court in Lake George was packed to absolute capacity.
Over two hundred journalists, financial analysts, and community members sat in the public gallery, their eyes fixed on the defense table where Tyler Vance and Julian Vance sat in standard khaki state inmate jumpsuits.
Tyler Vance looked twenty years older. His styled hair had grown out in thin, unkempt patches; his arrogant vanity had been completely stripped away, his hands trembling continuously against the oak table as Chief Prosecutor Robert Miller systematically presented over four hundred exhibits: the unsealed Lake George surveillance videos, the forensic banking audits, the forged proxy authorizations, and the testimony of Mr. Henderson.
When the high-definition video of the assault—capturing the exact moment Tyler shoved me into the freezing pool while his mother clapped and cheered—was projected onto the thirty-foot courtroom screens, a collective gasp of revulsion echoed through the gallery.
Judge Katherine Thornton adjusted her spectacles and read from the comprehensive sentencing memorandum with absolute, unyielding severity.
"On the charge of aggravated domestic battery resulting in bodily harm and reckless endangerment, the jury finds the defendant Tyler Vance guilty," Judge Thornton read, her voice ringing through the breathless chamber.
"On thirty-two counts of grand corporate larceny, interstate wire fraud, and the felonious forgery of commercial securities, both defendants are found guilty on all counts."
The judge paused, letting the crushing weight of the verdict settle over the silent room.
"Tyler Vance is hereby sentenced to eighteen years of imprisonment in a maximum-security state correctional facility, with zero possibility of parole before fourteen years."
"Julian Vance is sentenced to twelve years of state imprisonment."
"Furthermore, pursuant to the state civil asset forfeiture statutes, the entirety of the defendants' residual personal bank accounts, vehicles, and real estate holdings—totaling sixteen million dollars—are hereby forfeited to the Sterling Foundation Restitution Reserve."
The heavy wooden gavel struck the sound block with a sharp, definitive crack that sounded like the closing of an iron tomb.
Tyler slumped forward onto the defense table, letting out a dry, broken wail as two state marshals pulled his arms back, securing the heavy transport chains around his waist.
As he was led through the side prisoner exit, his bloodshot eyes caught mine where I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Arthur Ross.

I did not look at him with hatred, nor did I flinch. I sat tall, my posture calm, dignified, and regal, dressed in an elegant dark green silk dress, watching the man who had tried to drown my spirit being hauled away into the dark where he could never harm another human soul.
There was no anger left in my heart; there was only the cold, eternal finality of justice delivered.
