Chapter 4 - The Threat in the East Garden

Before I could speak, the glass windows of the basement pantry rattled with a sharp, concussive tremor.
Outside in the rear courtyard, the high-intensity halogen floodlights flickered twice, then clicked off, plunging the estate perimeter into total, pitch-black darkness.
Adrien’s hand went instantly to the inside of his waistband, drawing a custom, suppressed SIG Sauer P365 in a single, fluid motion that made no more sound than silk brushing against leather.
"Stay down, Clara," Adrien commanded in a whisper that didn't carry past the table. "Pick up your daughter and step behind the steel pantry bulkhead."
I moved with the automated precision of a terrified mother. I scooped Aisha from the daybed, wrapping her in her wool blanket, pressing her face against my neck as she stirred with a sleepy whimper.
The estate intercom system crackled once, spitting static through the hallway speakers.
A low, distorted voice echoed through the house:
"Adrien. You shouldn't have reopened the 2022 manifests. The Sinclair family has fifty million dollars in maritime infrastructure contracts closing with the state on Monday. If you walk out of that house tonight with the girl and the audit, neither of them will live to see sunrise."
The intercom died.
Footsteps moved across the gravel outside the basement window—heavy, tactical, rhythmic.
Adrien did not hesitate. He stepped to the service circuit breaker on the wall, flipped the secondary emergency battery toggle, and engaged the estate’s pneumatic security shutters.
Steel security plates slammed down over every ground-floor window and doorway with a series of concussive, echoing thuds, sealing the Whitfield mansion into an impenetrable fortress.
Adrien pulled his encrypted satellite phone from his pocket, dialing a single speed-dial digit.
"Frank," Adrien spoke into the receiver.
"Yes, Adrien?" Frank Callahan, his chief corporate trial counsel, answered from Manhattan.
"Deploy our private tactical response unit to the Bedford estate," Adrien ordered, his baritone steady as an open grave. "Notify Special Agent Raymond Callahan of the FBI’s Public Corruption Task Force. Tell him Richard Sinclair has deployed an armed hit team to my property, and that we are delivering the complete 2022 vehicular homicide files to his desk before dawn."

Adrien turned to me, his slate-gray eyes locking onto mine with an unshakeable, sovereign promise.
"You and your daughter are under the permanent protection of House Whitfield, Clara," Adrien said softly. "Nobody in this city will ever make you run again."
