Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Road

A month after the incident at Apex Motors, Chicago was hit by another massive spring storm. Rain sheeted down across Michigan Avenue, turning the asphalt into rivers of gray and forcing pedestrians to duck beneath awnings and subway entrances.
Inside the flagship showroom of Apex Motors, the atmosphere was warm, bright, and humming with a quiet, efficient energy.
Julian Vance walked down the center of the pristine Italian tile floor, wearing his tailored charcoal suit, checking in with the new sales associates who had been hired under his revamped, integrity-first management protocol. There was no room for arrogance here anymore; the culture of the floor had shifted entirely, modeled after the simple, uncompromising standard Julian had defended in the storm.
Near the front entrance, an elderly woman stood shaking out her umbrella, her raincoat damp from the downpour outside.
Before the receptionist could even blink, one of the senior sales directors—a man who had previously been known for his sharp elbows—hurried over with a warm smile, handing the woman a dry towel and offering her a seat by the indoor fountain.
Julian watched from the mezzanine balcony, a quiet, satisfied smile playing across his lips.
His phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out and saw a text message from an unlisted, heavily encrypted number—the same number that had called the showroom desk weeks ago.
“Checking in, General Manager. How’s the floor looking?”
Julian typed back a quick reply with a grin:
“Dry, clean, and treating people like human beings, Mr. Sterling. Come on by anytime. We’ll even leave the door unlocked for you.”
A minute later, a simple response popped up on his screen:
May you like
“Good. Keep building. I’m watching.”
Julian locked his phone, slipped it back into his pocket, and looked out through the massive glass windows at the rainy Chicago street below. The storm was fierce, but the showroom was safe, and the road ahead stretched out wide, clear, and full of infinite promise.
