Chapter 9 - The First Commission Check

Two weeks later, the direct-deposit notification pinged on Julian’s smartphone.

He stared at the screen, blinking twice. The figure deposited into his account wasn't just a monthly salary; it included a substantial retroactive bonus and a performance adjustment that wiped out every single penny of his mother’s medical debt with thousands left over.

That evening, Julian drove his new sedan—a sleek, midnight-blue luxury sedan he had purchased through the employee allocation program—straight to the modest suburban home where he had grown up.

When he pulled into the driveway and stepped out, the front door swung open almost immediately.

His mother stood on the porch, her face pale and tired from her ongoing treatments, wrapped in a knitted cardigan. She looked out at the luxury car parked in her modest driveway, then up at Julian, her eyes wide with bewilderment.

"Julian... whose car is that?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly. "Did you borrow a vehicle from work? Oh, honey, you shouldn't have—what if something happens to it?"

Julian walked up the porch steps, pulling a white envelope containing the bank confirmation letter and a medical debt clearance receipt from his jacket pocket. He handed it to her with a wide, radiant smile that reached all the way to his eyes.

"Mom, you don't have to worry about the hospital bills anymore," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. "They're paid. All of them. In full."

His mother stared at the papers, her hands shaking so badly she could barely hold the letter. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling over her cheeks as she looked from the receipt up to her son. "Julian... how? What happened? Did you get a promotion?"

"Something like that," Julian laughed softly, pulling her into a warm, tight embrace on the front porch. "I stood up for the wrong person at the right time, Mom. And it turned out the universe was watching."
