Chapter 2 - The Line in the Dust

The old man blinked against the bright lights, his chest heaving as he tried to speak through chattering teeth. "I... I just needed a moment to dry off, sir. The wind... it knocked my umbrella inside out down by the corner..."

"I don't care about your umbrella, and I don't care about the wind," Arthur snapped, stopping three feet away and holding up a hand as if keeping a rabid dog at bay. "This is Apex Motors. We deal in multi-hundred-thousand-dollar automobiles, not charity cases. You are tracking mud onto imported Italian tile, and you are offending our clientele. Turn around and walk back out those doors, or I'll have the street security detail throw you into the alley."

A murmur of approval rippled through a group of nearby prospective buyers, who chuckled softly into their champagne flutes.

Julian’s blood ran hot. He felt a tight, angry knot twist violently in his chest. He looked at the old man’s hands—they were raw, red, and calloused, hands that had clearly spent a lifetime doing hard, punishing labor. To treat someone with such casual, venomous cruelty just because their clothes were worn felt entirely wrong to Julian. His mother had always taught him that a person’s dignity was non-negotiable, regardless of what was written on their bank statement or sewn into the collar of their coat.

Stepping around the mahogany reception podium, Julian crossed the open expanse of tile and placed himself directly between Arthur Pendelton and the shivering stranger.

"Mr. Pendelton, wait," Julian said, keeping his voice calm, polite, and firmly leveled. "He's freezing. Look at him. It wouldn't cost us anything to let him sit by the radiator in the back lounge for ten minutes with a cup of warm coffee."

Arthur’s face flushed a furious, mottled crimson. His eyes bulged behind his designer frames. "Vance? Are you out of your absolute mind? Have you lost your head completely?"

"I’m just saying—"

"You are saying nothing!" Arthur interrupted, his voice rising to a shrill screech that pierced the showroom. "I run this floor, not you! Get this bum out of my sight, or consider your employment here terminated effective immediately. You have five seconds to clear this floor, assistant."

The showroom went dead silent. The background classical music seemed to fade into nothingness. Every eye in the room shifted to the confrontation unfolding near the entrance. Apex Motors was notorious for chewing up young aspirants, and everyone knew Arthur Pendelton held absolute power over who stayed and who went.

Julian looked down at the old man. The stranger’s tired, rheumy eyes met Julian’s, filled with a deep, crushing sorrow that went far beyond the sting of Arthur’s words.

Julian swallowed hard, feeling the phantom weight of his mother’s medical bills pressing down on his shoulders. He knew what losing this job meant. It meant defaulting on rent. It meant skipping treatments. It meant failure.

Yet, as he looked back at Arthur, Julian realized there were some things more expensive than a paycheck.

"No," Julian said quietly, his voice steady and unyielding. "I won't throw him out."
