Chapter 7 - The Auction of Arlington Woods

Three weeks later, on a crisp, golden autumn morning, the court-ordered bankruptcy auction of the Hale Corporation’s real estate empire was convened at the Richard J. Daley Center in downtown Chicago.
Over two hundred commercial developers, foreign investors, and financial journalists packed the grand auditorium, whispering in hushed excitement as the court-appointed receiver stepped up to the wooden podium.
Dominic and I sat in the front row of the private buyers' box, accompanied by Frank Callahan and Mateo.
"We are opening the bidding for Parcel One: The historic four-hundred-acre Arlington Woods Commercial Development in Schaumburg, including all commercial permits and infrastructure bonds," the auctioneer announced, banging his brass gavel. "Opening bid is thirty million dollars."
A commercial consortium from New York raised their paddle: "Thirty-five million."
A private equity group from Dallas countered: "Forty million."
"Forty-five million," a local developer called out.
I lifted my gold paddle, looking directly at the auctioneer.
"Seventy million dollars. Cash. Immediate escrow closing."
A breathless, stunned silence fell over the two hundred spectators in the hall.
The auctioneer looked around the room, his gavel hovering three inches above the sound block. "Seventy million dollars once... seventy million dollars twice... Sold! To the Elena Hayes Foundation and Vale Capital Holdings!"
The gavel struck the wood with concussive finality.
Frank Callahan smiled broadly, handing me the certified transfer certificates stamped with the gold seal of the State Superior Court.
"What are your instructions for the four hundred acres, Mrs. Vale?" Callahan asked with deep respect.
I looked out over the crowded hall, feeling an immense, clean peace wash through my soul.
"Level the private luxury golf course, Frank," I replied with a radiant, unyielding smile. "Construct a state-of-the-art vocational academy and collegiate residential campus for single working mothers and service professionals. Let's make sure that land is used to build real futures, instead of feeding the arrogance of spoiled boys."

Dominic reached over, taking my hand into his, his fingers intertwining with mine, his gray eyes shining with boundless, eternal admiration.
"Your foundation, my love," Dominic whispered softly. "Your rules."
