Chapter 8 - The Morning Sun on Astor Street

By early spring, the transformation of our life was complete.

The Monarch Room remained permanently closed, its interior completely dismantled and converted into a sunlit public library and community arts center overlooking Rush Street.

My hair had grown into a lush, beautiful shoulder-length style that I wore with proud, effortless grace.

The scars from that Friday night were gone, but the fire it had awakened within my heart had reshaped our entire world.

Every morning, Dominic and I would sit together on the sun-drenched terrace of our Astor Street brownstone, overlooking the blooming magnolia gardens.

We would drink our coffee, review the progress reports from our vocational academy in Schaumburg, and discuss the expansion of our women’s legal advocacy clinics across the Midwest.

Dominic had changed.

The cold, ruthless sovereign who had ruled the city from the shadows had found an anchor—a partner who challenged his power with honor, who brought warmth to his cold marble halls, and who stood beside him as an absolute equal in every room.

One sunny Saturday morning in May, Dominic set his porcelain cup down on the cedar table, reaching across to gently cup my cheek in his warm, strong hand.

"What are you thinking about, Elena?" Dominic asked softly, his slate-gray eyes full of deep, enduring tenderness.

I looked down at the gold wedding band on my finger, then up into the eyes of the man who had brought a city to its knees for a single lock of my hair.

"I was thinking about the deal we made eleven months ago," I smiled softly, leaning my cheek into his palm. "When I told you I needed something that belonged to me, and not your reputation."

Dominic’s lips curved into a soft, breathtaking smile.

"And do you have it now, El?" he murmured.

"I have something much better, Dom," I answered softly, resting my hand over his heart. "I have a life built on truth, an empire built on justice, and a husband who will never let me stand alone in the dark."
