Chapter 9 - The Sovereign Gala

In June, beneath the towering glass arches of the newly dedicated Elena Vale Center for Public Service on Michigan Avenue, three hundred distinguished civic leaders, working-class champions, and philanthropists gathered for the annual Foundation Gala.
The grand hall was bathed in the warm, golden glow of afternoon sunlight streaming through sixty-foot architectural windows overlooking the city skyline.
On the main stage sat forty scholarship recipients—young women who had worked twelve-hour shifts in diners, laundromats, and hotels, now holding fully funded degrees in law, nursing, and structural engineering.
I stood at the center podium wearing an exquisite, floor-length gown of emerald silk, looking out over the sea of smiling, proud faces.
Beside the stage stood Dominic Vale in a sharp, bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, his arms folded, watching me with a heart full of unshakeable, boundless pride.
I stepped up to the microphone, my voice carrying clear, resonant, and inspiring across the vast, silent room:
"True power is not measured by the money we inherit, the fear we command, or the cruelty we inflict upon those who serve us," I addressed the audience, my smile radiant and fearless. "It is measured only by the dignity we protect, the courage we show when we are tested in the dark, and the love that refuses to let cruelty win. Tonight, we celebrate every hand that works, every voice that speaks truth to power, and the sovereign light that will forever guide this city into tomorrow."
The auditorium erupted into a thunderous, standing ovation that echoed off the vaulted ceilings, waves of cheers and applause filling the air.
Dr. Sarah Lin, Frank Callahan, and Mateo raised their glasses from the front row, their faces beaming with profound joy.
After the ceremony, as the guests moved toward the outdoor terrace overlooking the sparkling blue waters of Lake Michigan, Dominic walked up to me by the grand marble balustrade.
He handed me a glass of chilled sparkling cider, clinking his glass gently against mine with a soft, musical chime.
"How does it feel, Mrs. Vale?" Dominic asked softly, his eyes full of boundless devotion.

I looked out over the vast, glowing expanse of the city where the evening lights were beginning to twinkle under a cloudless sapphire sky, then turned my eyes up to meet his.
"It feels like freedom, Dom," I answered with a heart full of absolute, unbreakable peace. "Pure, sovereign freedom."
