Chapter 4 - The Arrival of Eleanor Carter

The heavy mahogany doors of the administration building did not bang open; they were parted smoothly by two plainclothes state troopers wearing tactical earpieces.

Down the carpeted hallway came Governor Eleanor Carter.

She wore a tailored charcoal pantsuit with an ivory silk blouse, her dark hair pulled back into a sharp, efficient chignon. At forty-eight, Eleanor possessed a presence that commanded rooms before she ever spoke a single word. Behind her walked two senior investigators from the State Attorney General’s Special Crimes and Public Integrity Division, carrying thick leather portfolios.

As she stepped through the threshold into Vance’s office, the room went entirely airless.

Eleanor didn't look at Harrison Sterling. She didn't look at Headmaster Vance, who was currently attempting an awkward, deferential half-bow.

She walked straight to the armchair where Emily sat.

Eleanor knelt down on the oriental rug, uncaring that the fabric of her tailored trousers pressed against the floorboards. She reached out, her hands warm, steady, and gentle, cupping Emily’s scrubbed face. Her sharp gray eyes scanned every inch of her daughter’s skin—the red welts near the hairline where Brianna’s nails had dug in, the lingering stain of tomato on her cardigan collar.

"Are you hurt anywhere else, sweetheart?" Eleanor asked, her voice dropping into a soft, private register that belonged only to a mother.

Emily shook her head gently. "No, Mom. Just my neck. And my book was ruined."

Eleanor offered a faint, reassuring smile. "We can replace the book, Em."

She stood up slowly. As she turned around to face the rest of the room, the maternal warmth vanished from her face, replaced by the lethal, frostbitten steel of the state’s chief executive.

Harrison Sterling cleared his throat, forcing an expansive, practiced smile as he stepped around the sofa, extending his hand. "Governor Carter. What an unexpected visit. If Lawrence had informed us that Emily was your daughter, we would have arranged a formal reception—"

Eleanor did not look at his hand. She didn't even acknowledge the gesture. Harrison’s fingers hung in the air for three humiliating seconds before he awkwardly pulled them back into his pocket.

"Headmaster Vance," Eleanor said, her voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. "Three weeks ago, my office received a formal written report from this school regarding a physical altercation in the locker room involving my daughter and Miss Sterling."

Vance’s collar suddenly seemed three sizes too small. "Ah—yes, Governor! A minor misunderstanding between students, quickly mediated by our guidance staff—"

"The report stated," Eleanor interrupted, her tone devoid of all mercy, "that Emily had initiated the conflict, sustained minor bruises due to a slip on wet tile, and that Miss Sterling had merely attempted to assist her."

Eleanor signaled one of the investigators behind her. The man stepped forward, opening his leather portfolio and extracting an iPad linked to a portable cellular router.

"This," Eleanor continued, tapping the screen, "is the internal security footage from that locker room hallway, pulled twenty minutes ago by my state cyber-crimes unit using an executive oversight subpoena. Would you like to explain to me, Headmaster Vance, why your official incident report contradicts sixty seconds of clear video showing Miss Sterling shoving my daughter down a flight of concrete stairs?"
