Chapter 7 - The Arrest in the Grand Foyer

The transition from the headmaster’s quiet office to the grand foyer of Oakridge Academy was like walking out of an execution chamber into an amphitheater.

News of the Governor’s arrival and the cafeteria incident had spread through the student body like an electric current. Despite the administration's frantic announcements ordering students to remain in their classrooms, hundreds of teenagers lined the grand mezzanine, the double staircases, and the glass balconies overlooking the main entrance hall.

Phones were out. Thousands of video streams were already broadcasting across social media platforms.

The double doors of the administrative wing clicked open.

First came the state troopers, their broad-brimmed hats and crisp uniforms cutting an imposing path through the foyer. And between them, his head bowed, his hands cuffed tightly behind his tailored back, was Harrison Sterling.

A collective, deafening gasp echoed off the vaulted ceiling.

Harrison—the man whose name was carved into the marble pediment above the library, the man who had expelled three students the previous term simply for parking in his daughter’s reserved spot—was being led down the marble steps like a common street criminal. His face was pale, his eyes fixed on his own polished shoes, unable to look up at the sea of students holding up their smartphones.

Right behind him walked Brianna, clutching her mother’s phone to her ear, sobbing hysterically as she tried to reach lawyers who were already refusing to take the Sterling family's calls. Chloe and Taylor stood frozen near the lockers, deliberately backing away into the crowd, pretending they barely knew the girl they had spent eighteen months worshiping.

Then came Governor Eleanor Carter, holding Emily’s hand.

Emily had changed out of her ruined sweater, wearing a clean navy hoodie provided by the state patrol unit. She didn't look triumphant. She didn't smirk or mock the sobbing girl being escorted past her. She simply walked with her chin up, her gaze steady, her composure radiating a dignity that Brianna’s millions of dollars could never purchase.

As they reached the heavy glass doors leading out to the circular driveway, the bright glare of camera flashes exploded against the glass.

Dozens of news vans lined the lawn. Microphones were thrust forward over the velvet ropes by reporters shouting over one another:

"Governor Carter! Is it true Harrison Sterling has been arrested for public corruption?"

"Governor! Was your daughter targeted on campus?"

"Governor Carter, will the Riverfront Project be suspended?"

Eleanor paused on the top stone step, shielding Emily behind her with one arm while the State Police formed a secure cordon around them. She stepped up to the nearest microphone cluster, her voice amplified across the courtyard, clear, steady, and unyielding:

"The safety of our students is not for sale," Eleanor announced to the cameras, her words broadcast live across four regional networks. "The laws of this state apply equally to every citizen—regardless of whether your name is on a birth certificate or carved into a building. Effective immediately, the Department of Education has placed Oakridge Preparatory Academy under temporary state conservatorship. And the individuals responsible for exploiting our public funds and endangering our children will answer to the full extent of the law."
