Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Harrison Sterling

Harrison’s knees visibly buckled. He grabbed the high back of the leather sofa to steady himself, his platinum watch clinking against the wooden trim.

"You called the press?" Harrison whispered in horror. "To a private school campus?"

"The campus is built on municipal land leased from the state for one dollar a year," Eleanor said smoothly. "Which makes the exterior courtyard entirely public property. And while the cameras are setting up outside, the State Police Financial Crimes Unit is currently executing three simultaneous search warrants: at your corporate headquarters downtown, at your private residence in Shaker Heights, and inside the server room down the hall."

Headmaster Vance let out a strange, choking sound and dropped heavily into his desk chair, burying his face in his trembling hands. He knew what was stored on the school’s private server: years of donor favors, scrubbed disciplinary records for the children of billionaires, and manipulated grade transcripts designed to secure Ivy League admissions in exchange for athletic center funding.

Brianna began to cry in earnest now—no longer the theatrical tears she had used to mock Emily, but the terrified, hyperventilating sobs of a child who realizes the fortress around her has completely vanished.

"Dad... do something," Brianna wept, tugging at her father's sleeve. "Tell them to leave! Tell them who you are!"

"Be quiet!" Harrison shouted, wrenching his arm away from his daughter’s grip with shocking brutality. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and wild. He pointed a shaking finger at Eleanor. "You think you’re untouchable, Carter? You think because you hold the executive mansion you can steamroll the families that built this state? My family funded your predecessor's campaigns! We own half the commercial real estate on the south corridor! You come after me, and every donor in this state will pull their capital out of your legislative agenda!"

Eleanor didn't even blink.

"Harrison," she murmured, her voice carrying the chilling stillness of a judge passing sentence, "you don't own capital anymore. As of twelve-fifteen today, the State Financial Regulatory Board placed an emergency administrative freeze on all domestic bank accounts linked to Apex Land Holdings and its subsidiary trusts."

Harrison stared at her, his jaw slack, the breath whistling through his teeth like air escaping a punctured tire.

"Every contractor on the Riverfront project has been notified," Eleanor added. "Every bond underwriter has suspended their guarantee. You aren't a titan of industry anymore, Harrison. You are an indicted felon whose assets are currently being audited by forty forensic accountants."

The hallway outside echoed with the sharp sound of heavy boots.

Two uniformed State Police sergeants stepped through the doorway, carrying a set of polished steel handcuffs. The lead sergeant nodded respectfully to Eleanor.

"Governor. The search team has secured the server room. The search warrant for the suspect's person has been approved by Judge Martinez."

Eleanor stepped aside, gesturing toward Harrison.

"Proceed, Sergeant."
