Chapter 5 - The Reckoning in the Lobby

Arthur Sterling slowly rose to his feet.
He didn't tower over his mother; he towered over everyone else in the room. When he turned around to face the reception desk, the transformation was terrifying. The warmth in his eyes was gone, replaced by an arctic, murderous rage that made the temperature in the lobby plummet twenty degrees.
He walked slowly across the terrazzo, his footsteps echoing like gunshots against the marble pillars.
Sarah Jenkins was hyperventilating. She grabbed the edge of the quartz counter, her knees buckling beneath her, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
"Mr... Mr. Sterling... I... I didn't know!" Sarah shrieked, her voice pitching up into a hysterical, jagged plea. "She didn't have an ID! She was wearing a coat from a thrift store! How was I supposed to know she was your mother?!"
"You were supposed to treat every human being who walks through those revolving doors with basic human dignity, Ms. Jenkins," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a low, glacial baritone that made the security guards instinctively take two steps backward.
"I... I was just following operational protocols! I was protecting the building!" Sarah sobbed, tears streaming down her face, ruining her makeup.
"Protecting the building from an eighty-year-old woman with a cane," Arthur mocked, every syllable dripping with absolute venom. "And in doing so, you assaulted my lobby runner. You fired an eighteen-year-old kid who showed more courage, empathy, and decency in ten seconds than you have displayed in your entire career at this company."
Arthur turned his head, looking past Sarah toward Ethan, who was standing by the entrance with his mouth open, holding his dropped employee badge in his hand.
"Ethan," Arthur called out, his voice softening just a fraction.
"Y-yes, sir?" Ethan stammered.
"Come here, son."
Ethan walked across the floor, stopping a few feet away from the billionaire CEO and the elderly founder.
Arthur reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a gold-embossed executive access card—an omni-pass that granted clearance to every floor, every server room, and every executive suite in the Apex tower—and held it out toward Ethan.
"Ms. Jenkins," Arthur said, turning back to the weeping manager without looking away from Ethan. "Clear your desk. Hand your security credentials to Bill. You are terminated for cause, effective immediately. Your pension is forfeited, your stock options are nullified, and my legal team will be reviewing your employee file for three separate counts of workplace harassment and assault."

Sarah let out a piercing, animalistic wail, collapsing onto the terrazzo floor in a heap of charcoal wool and shattered pride.
Bill and the other security guard looked at each other, quietly stepping back, offering no assistance to the woman who had terrorized them for years.
