Chapter 8 - The Foundation Restored

That evening, the Apex BioTech tower buzzed with a completely different kind of energy.
The culture of fear, intimidation, and cold corporate elitism that had defined the lobby for a decade was actively being dismantled. Security guards had received new operational guidelines emphasizing hospitality, assistance, and human dignity over aggressive gatekeeping.
Down in the private executive dining room, Martha Sterling sat at the head of a long mahogany table, wearing a comfortable cashmere cardigan, laughing heartily as Ethan recounted his first two weeks on the job.
"And then Mr. Henderson, the night manager at my old diner, tried to charge me a ten-dollar penalty for covering an old man's dinner," Ethan chuckled, shaking his head.
Martha smiled, her pale blue eyes twinkling with warmth. "People who hoard their wealth and their kindness are the poorest souls on earth, Ethan. Never let this place make you forget what it feels like to be on the outside looking in."
"I won't, Mrs. Sterling," Ethan promised, his voice steady and sincere. "I never will."
Arthur sat beside his mother, watching the young man with profound respect. He knew that the ghost of the old Apex—cold, ruthless, and disconnected—had finally been exorcised from the building.
As dinner concluded, Arthur walked Ethan down to the ground-floor lobby to ensure his safe departure.
The lobby was quiet now. The evening shift security guards—two new men trained under the revised human-first protocols—nodded respectfully as Ethan and the CEO walked past.
Ethan stepped up to the revolving glass doors, pulling his jacket tight against the cold night wind.

"See you tomorrow at eight sharp, Director," Arthur smiled, clapping a hand on Ethan’s shoulder.
"Yes, sir. Goodnight, Mr. Sterling."
