Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Circle

The sun slipped below the Chicago skyline, setting the great towers of steel and glass ablaze with sweeping brushstrokes of gold, amber, and deep violet.
Along Lake Michigan, the evening breeze blew cool and sweet, carrying the distant hum of traffic and the peaceful, steady rhythm of a city breathing easy.
Inside her sunlit office on the third floor of Saint Jude’s, Emily Carter sat behind her mahogany desk, reviewing the architectural plans for the three new community health centers opening next month.
The heavy oak door clicked open.
Martha Vance walked into the room, holding two cups of hot chamomile tea. She set one down on Emily’s desk and pulled up a chair.
"Working late again, Director Carter?" Martha teased softly.
Emily looked up from her blueprints, a radiant, unburdened smile breaking across her face.
"Just finishing the blueprints for the West Side clinic, Mrs. Vance," Emily said. "Everything is on schedule. The foundation is solid."
Martha nodded, looking out through the broad glass window at the twinkling lights of the city stretching out toward the horizon.

"The foundation is always solid, Emily," the old woman murmured, raising her teacup in a silent toast. "As long as there are people willing to stand in the lobby and hold the door open."
Emily raised her cup to meet it, the porcelain clinking with a clear, resonant ring that echoed like a bell through the quiet room—a room that had finally, permanently learned the true meaning of healing.
