Chapter 6 - The Cleansing of Saint Jude’s

Over the next three months, the transformation at Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital was swift, merciless, and permanent.

The culture of cold corporate exclusivity was systematically dismantled. The VIP intake queues were abolished; the glass partitions at the main reception desks were removed to create an open, welcoming environment; and thirty administrative positions that had previously been squandered on middle-management bureaucrats were reallocated to hire eighty new frontline nurses, bilingual patient advocates, and emergency social workers.

Derek Vance’s former office on the third floor—a sprawling suite of leather furniture and private wet bars—was converted into the Patient Family Resource Center, a warm, sunlit space where low-income families could receive financial counseling, nutritional support, and emergency lodging assistance while their loved ones underwent treatment.

And Emily Carter?

She didn't lock herself away in a ivory tower office. She kept a small, sunlit desk right beside the main entrance of the hospital, where every patient, every frightened family member, and every weary traveler who walked through the revolving doors was greeted by her warm, unwavering smile.

One afternoon in early spring, as Emily was reviewing a batch of community clinic grants, the private executive elevator chimed softly behind her desk.

The doors parted, and Martha Vance stepped out, wearing her gray wool coat—though today it was freshly pressed—leaning slightly on her aluminum walker, her slate-gray eyes bright with energy.

"Afternoon, Director Carter," Martha greeted cheerfully, walking over to Emily’s desk.

"Afternoon, Mrs. Vance," Emily smiled, standing up and offering a respectful hug. "How was the regional health board meeting in Springfield?"

"Long, exhausting, and entirely necessary," Martha chuckled, taking a seat in the guest chair. "We secured the funding for the three new community clinics on the West Side. Your proposal on preventative care access clinched the vote."

Emily’s face lit up. "Really? They approved the full budget?"

"Every single dollar," Martha confirmed. "Your father would have been very proud, Emily. You built a bridge where the old guard only built walls."
