Chapter 5 - The New Director of Patient Dignity

The silence in the grand conference room was profound. Twenty senior directors sat motionless, staring down at their blotters, terrified to make a sound.

Martha Vance picked up a heavy gold fountain pen from the center of the table and slid it across the mahogany wood toward Emily Carter.

"Emily," Martha said, her voice softening into a warm, resonant cadence. "You defended an old woman in a patched coat because you believed she deserved a phone call. How much were you making as a lead patient advocate?"

"Nineteen dollars an hour, Mrs. Vance," Emily replied, her voice steady, though her hands were trembling slightly.

Martha nodded once. "Unacceptable. Under Section 4 of the hospital’s founding charter, the Board of Trustees has established the Office of Patient Dignity and Frontline Advocacy. You are hereby appointed as its Executive Director, reporting directly to my office."

Emily’s breath caught in her throat. She gripped the edge of the table. "Director? But... I don't have a degree in healthcare administration yet! I'm still taking night classes!"

"You have a degree in human decency, Emily," Martha said firmly. "Which is the one qualification we cannot teach at university. The position carries an annual salary of one hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars, full administrative voting rights on the hospital board, and an irrevocable educational trust that covers one hundred percent of your degree, your sister’s tuition, and your mother’s medical expenses."

Emily stared at the parchment, her vision blurring with sudden, hot tears. She thought of her cramped apartment, the mounting bills, the constant, suffocating terror of losing her job for doing the right thing.

She reached out, picked up the gold pen, and signed her name across the dotted line: Emily Carter.
