Chapter 5 - The Dismissal of Victoria

Within four minutes, the heavy double oak entrance doors swung open.
Arthur, the head of private estate security—a former military officer with silver hair and a face carved out of weathered granite—entered the foyer, followed by two armed security guards in crisp dark suits.
Victoria remained crumpled on the marble floor, weeping not from remorse, but from the terrifying realization that her twelve-year reign of terror had ended in total, unmitigated ruin.
"Arthur," Ethan said, not sparing the kneeling woman a single glance. "Escort Ms. Vance to her quarters. She is permitted to take her personal clothing and nothing else. Every drawer, bag, and digital device is to be cataloged and surrendered to the district attorney’s forensic team."
"Right away, Mr. Ethan," Arthur replied, stepping forward with his guards.
"You can't do this to me!" Victoria shrieked, struggling as two security officers hauled her up by her arms. Her polished bun had completely unraveled, gray strands hanging wild across her face. "The Vance family built this port! My brother will take your corporate shares! You will lose everything, Ethan Sterling!"
Ethan stepped directly into her path as they dragged her toward the vestibule. He looked down at her with a calm, freezing disdain that cut through her hysterical screaming like a diamond through glass.
"Your brother’s commercial licenses were revoked by the maritime commission at three o'clock this afternoon, Victoria," Ethan informed her calmly. "He is currently sitting in a federal holding cell in Manhattan answering questions regarding offshore money laundering. By morning, there will be no Vance family influence left to protect you."
Victoria’s jaw went slack. The fight completely drained out of her, leaving behind a hollow, trembling husk.
"Get her out of my house," Ethan commanded quietly.
The security guards dragged her through the vestibule. The heavy exterior doors slammed shut behind them with a dull, final thud that seemed to echo down through the very foundations of the mansion.
The silence that returned to the foyer was profound, clean, and vast.
Sarah stood beside the staircase, her arms locked tightly around Toby. She was breathing in shallow, ragged gasps, the adrenaline of the confrontation slowly wearing off, leaving behind a bone-deep, overwhelming exhaustion. She looked at the bloodstained handkerchief wrapped around her palm, feeling entirely untethered from reality.
Ethan turned around.
The cold authority that had dominated the room evaporated in an instant. He looked at Sarah, then down at Toby, who was watching him with wide, unblinking eyes.
Ethan took a step toward them, but Sarah instinctively shifted backward, her maid’s training and seven years of survival instinct fighting against the impossible reality unfolding before her.
"Ethan..." Sarah choked out, her voice trembling. "What happens to us now? Where do we go?"
May you like
Ethan stopped. He looked at her as if she had struck him across the face.
"Go?" Ethan repeated softly. "Sarah... you are home."
