Chapter 6 - The Boy Who Carried His Eyes

"I am the maid, Ethan," Sarah whispered, her voice cracking as fresh tears welled in her eyes. She gestured down to the stained black dress, the cheap canvas shoes, and the white apron that marked her as domestic staff. "Look at me. I live in the carriage house room with a radiator that barely works. I clean the silver you eat from. You are a billionaire with a corporate board watching your every move. You cannot just... undo seven years of separation in an evening."

Ethan did not argue with words.

He walked deliberately across the marble floor, closing the distance between them until he was standing just inches away. He reached out with both hands, gently, reverently taking Sarah’s hands into his own. He ignored the damp cloth, the bloodstains, and the rough, chapped skin of her palms. He held her fingers as if they were made of spun glass.

"You were never a maid to me, Sarah," Ethan said, his voice thick with an emotion he had kept locked away in the dark for nearly a decade. "And you will never wear that uniform again."

Toby tugged on Ethan’s suit jacket, his small face tilted upward with persistent curiosity.

"Mr. Ethan?" Toby asked, his voice cutting through the heavy adult sorrow. "Why did Ms. Victoria call you my father in the other room?"

Sarah’s breath hitched. She tried to pull her hands away, panic flaring in her eyes, but Ethan held her fast, refusing to let her run.

Ethan slowly lowered himself to both knees on the cold marble floor.

He brought himself completely level with the six-year-old boy. He looked into Toby’s face—not with the polite, distant kindness of a master of the house, but with the desperate, hungry recognition of a father who had been robbed of his son’s first steps, his first words, his first laughs.

"Toby," Ethan said, his hands moving gently to rest on the boy’s small shoulders. "Look at my eyes."

Toby looked. He blinked, his hazel eyes studying the deep, identical flecks of gold circling Ethan’s pupils.

"They look like my eyes," Toby said softly, his brow furrowing in deep contemplation.

"They are your eyes," Ethan replied, a tear finally escaping his own eye, tracking down the hard contour of his cheek. "And your chin... your stubborn chin... you got that from me, too."

Toby turned his head to look at his mother. "Mommy? Is Mr. Ethan the daddy who was lost across the ocean?"

Sarah covered her mouth with her trembling, bandaged hand, a broken sob tearing from her chest. For six years, whenever Toby asked why other children had fathers at the park while he only had a tired mother in a uniform, Sarah had told him that his father was a brave captain whose ship had been delayed in deep, dark waters far away.

"Yes, Toby," Sarah wept, nodding through her tears. "He was lost. But... he found his way back to us."

Toby turned back to Ethan. He didn't hesitate. With the absolute, unreserved grace that only a child possesses, the little boy threw his arms around Ethan’s neck, pressing his cheek against the lapel of the expensive black suit.

Ethan’s arms snapped around his son, pulling the boy flush against his chest, burying his face in Toby’s soft hair. A ragged, guttural breath escaped the billionaire’s chest as he held his flesh and blood for the very first time, weeping openly on the foyer floor.
