Chapter 7 - The Uncovering of the Plot

By midnight, the storm had passed, leaving behind a clear, freezing sky glittering with cold winter stars.

Inside the private master library on the second floor, a roaring fire crackled in the wide stone hearth, casting long, dancing ribbons of amber light across walls lined with thousands of leather-bound volumes.

Toby had fallen fast asleep on the oversized velvet sofa, curled beneath a heavy cashmere throw, his small hand still clutching an antique silver pocket watch Ethan had gifted him an hour earlier. His breathing was deep, rhythmic, and peaceful—the sleep of a child who finally knew he was safe within an unshakeable fortress.

Sarah sat in a deep leather armchair beside the fire. She had washed her face, unpinned her hair so it fell softly over her shoulders, and changed into a warm woolen sweater and trousers that Ethan’s private staff had hurriedly retrieved from the guest suites. A steaming mug of chamomile tea sat on the low mahogany table beside her, untouched.

Ethan sat across from her at the edge of the desk, reviewing a stack of certified legal briefs and banking statements that Arthur had delivered thirty minutes prior.

"It was a coordinated liquidation," Ethan explained quietly, setting down a document stamped with the seal of the Massachusetts Superior Court. "When Marcus Vance realized you were pregnant seven years ago, he knew that under the original terms of my grandfather’s trust, any child born to me would automatically vest twenty-five percent of the voting shares upon their fifth birthday, completely bypassing the corporate board."

Sarah looked up, the firelight catching the amber rings in her eyes. "So they weren't just trying to break up our marriage."

"They were trying to prevent an unapproved heir from taking control of the shipping terminals," Ethan confirmed, his jaw tight. "Marcus and Victoria manufactured the embezzlement allegations against your brother’s clinic to force you into hiding. They calculated that if you remained off the grid for seven years, the state would legally classify you as voluntarily estranged, voiding Toby’s inheritance rights under the old maritime code."

"And the placement agency?" Sarah asked, her fingers tracing the edge of her teacup. "Why did they send me here three weeks ago?"

"Because Victoria’s greed finally outpaced her caution," Ethan replied, turning the page to reveal a private communication log. "She discovered you were living in a shelter in south Boston. She knew I was scheduled to be in Rotterdam for six months overseeing the harbor expansion. She intentionally had the domestic agency place you here under an assumed service profile, intending to frame you for grand theft of the estate's heirloom jewelry while I was overseas—ensuring you would be sent to a state penitentiary where your parental rights could be permanently terminated."

Sarah shivered, pulling the woolen sweater tighter around her chest. The sheer, cold-blooded malice of the plot was staggering. She had walked straight into the lion's mouth, believing she was merely scrubbing floors to buy Toby milk, entirely unaware that every step she took on the marble was being tracked by a predator waiting to spring the trap.

"She almost succeeded," Sarah murmured. "If Toby hadn't run to you in the corridor tonight... if you hadn't come home early from the docks..."

Ethan stood up from the desk. He walked across the Persian rug, stopping right beside her chair. He reached down, taking her cup and setting it aside, then reached for both of her hands, pulling her gently to her feet.

"I didn't come home early by accident, Sarah," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a tender, fierce whisper. "Arthur called my private line in Rotterdam three days ago. He told me the new junior maid had a six-year-old boy who had her smile and my eyes. I chartered a private jet that very hour."
