Chapter 2 - The Silent Wing

By 4:30 p.m., the Highland Park residence had been converted into an active criminal staging ground.
Three black tactical transport units from the Dallas Police Department’s Special Investigations Division blocked the circular motor court, while armed investigators secured the perimeter. The forty-two baby shower guests had been escorted to the media pavilion for sworn evidentiary depositions, their whispered shock echoing across the manicured lawns.
Ethan sat at the massive walnut desk in his private first-floor study. Maya sat curled in the deep leather armchair beside him, wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, sipping warm cider that Marcus’s wife had brought from the kitchen.
Detective Robert Miller—a veteran twenty-year investigator who had worked with Ethan’s late father—stepped into the study, closing the heavy oak doors behind him.
"We ran the patient record number through the Texas Department of State Health Services database, Ethan," Detective Miller reported, laying an unsealed manila portfolio onto the desk. "The bracelet is authentic."
Ethan leaned forward, his jaw tight as carved granite. "Where is my sister, Robert?"
"On August fourth, an unidentified female matching Olivia Cole’s physical description was admitted through the private ambulance bay at Methodist Maverick under the care of Dr. Harold Sterling," Miller explained, his finger tracing the medical intake forms. "She delivered a healthy baby boy weighing six pounds eight ounces at five-twenty-two that morning. The birth was registered under the name Ethan Vance Cole Jr.—with Brittany Cole listed as the primary legal mother via an alleged private gestational surrogacy contract executed in Delaware."
"Surrogacy?" Ethan whispered, the horrific, predatory architecture of the scheme crystallizing in his mind. "I never signed a surrogacy agreement. I never provided genetic material."
"You didn't," Miller said grimly. "The biological paternity matches an anonymous offshore donor profile procured through Sterling’s private clinic. But under the Delaware contract bearing your forged electronic signature, the child was to be adopted directly into your marital estate, transferring full equitable guardianship to Brittany."
Marcus Thorne stepped to the desk, sliding his tablet across the blotter.
"And here is the motive, boss," Marcus said, tapping the screen to display the corporate structure of Cole Logistics. "Section Twelve of your father’s master testamentary charter: If Olivia Cole has a surviving biological heir, fifty-one percent of the master shipping terminal equity vests immediately in that child upon birth. If Olivia is deceased or legally declared incapacitated without an heir, her shares revert to you and your legal spouse."
Ethan’s knuckles turned white where they gripped the edge of the walnut desk.
"Brittany didn't just want a baby to save our marriage," Ethan said, his voice dropping into an octave of lethal, subterranean iron. "She wanted to harvest my sister's child to seize control of the entire shipping network."
Detective Miller looked at his watch.
"We obtained an emergency search warrant for Dr. Sterling’s private estate in Cedar Hill thirty minutes ago," Miller stated. "A private nursing detail has been logging daily pharmaceutical requisitions for an unregistered patient in the subterranean guest wing."
Ethan stood up slowly, picking up his keys and his leather jacket.
"I’m going with you, Robert."

"Ethan, it’s an active police raid—"
"That is my sister," Ethan interrupted, his slate-gray eyes locking onto the detective with an authority that brooked zero argument. "And my nephew. I am bringing them home."
