Chapter 6 - The Visitor in the Federal Ward

The medical detention block of the Federal Correctional Institution in Seagoville smelled of cold concrete, industrial disinfectant, and bitter, rotting pride.

Brittany Cole sat on the edge of a stainless-steel cot bolted to the wall, wearing an oversized orange institutional jumpsuit.

Her expensive manicure had been chipped down to the nails; her styled blonde hair was unwashed, hanging in stringy tangles across her pale, sallow face. Her wrists were secured to a heavy leather transport belt around her waist.

The heavy steel slider door buzzed open with a loud hydraulic clank.

Ethan Cole walked into the cell.

He did not hurry. His leather boots clicked rhythmically against the concrete with a slow, deliberate cadence. He wore a dark wool overcoat over his three-piece suit, his posture commanding, sovereign, and entirely unbothered.

Brittany flinched back against the concrete wall, her bloodshot eyes widening in a mixture of feral hatred and visceral terror.

"You came to gloat," Brittany spat, her voice cracking into a dry, hoarse rasp.

"I came to return your jewelry, Brittany," Ethan said softly, stopping three paces from the cot.

He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out the platinum-and-diamond wedding ring he had placed on her finger four years ago, and dropped it onto the steel cot. The ring bounced once, rolling across the rough mattress before falling through the floor drain grate in the corner.

"Our marriage was an act of premeditated commercial fraud, Brittany," Ethan said, each word falling like an iron anvil onto the concrete. "We traced the Delaware contracts. We seized the Austin real estate. We arrested your mother at the Petroleum Club two hours ago."

Brittany let out a dry, bitter laugh that cracked along the edges. "You think you’re so righteous, Ethan! You spent four years buried in your container terminals, treating me like a decorative accessory while your sister ran the software division! I was supposed to be the First Lady of Dallas logistics! I deserved fifty percent of that empire!"

"You didn't build an empire, Brittany," Ethan replied, his slate-gray eyes locking onto hers with freezing clarity. "You stole a baby from a locked room and wore a piece of silicone around your waist to pretend you had a soul."

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a copy of the morning's unsealed state supreme court decree.

He dropped the document onto the cot.

"The family court granted an absolute, emergency annulment of our marriage at eight-fifteen this morning," Ethan said. "Your name has been legally excised from every trust, every account, and every property in the Cole estate. And your parental claims to Ethan Jr. have been declared null and void with prejudice."

Brittany slumped forward onto the cot, burying her face in her cuffed hands, weeping with the raw, ugly agony of a woman who had realized that her vanity had left her completely alone in the dark.

"Ethan... please," she sobbed through her fingers. "I did it because I was afraid of losing you... I wanted us to have a family..."

Ethan looked at the woman on the cot.

The grief that had torn through his heart on the afternoon of the baby shower was gone, replaced by the deep, eternal serenity of a man who had pulled his bloodline back from the edge of an abyss.

"You never wanted a family, Brittany," Ethan whispered softly. "You wanted a kingdom. And now you can rule your cell."

Ethan turned his back on the broken woman.

"Guard," Ethan called out.

The heavy steel door slid open, and Ethan walked down the echoing corridor into the bright Texas sunshine, leaving Brittany Cole to weep in the concrete shadows where she would remain for a very long time.
