Chapter 4 - The Recovery and the Records

By midnight, the tenth-floor private executive pavilion at Baylor University Medical Center in downtown Dallas had been converted into an impenetrable fortress.
Sixteen armed private security operators from Cole Logistics stood guard at every elevator bank, stairwell, and service corridor. The entire floor had been placed under an emergency executive medical charter, barring all public and media access.
Olivia sat propped up in a plush hospital bed, wrapped in a warm fleece robe, holding three-week-old Ethan Jr. against her chest. The infant was nursing peacefully, his cheeks pink and healthy, while Dr. Sarah Lin, the hospital’s chief maternal-fetal specialist, gently checked Olivia’s vital signs.
"The physical recovery is remarkably strong, Ethan," Dr. Lin reported, stepping over to the private sitting area where Ethan and Arthur Ross sat. "The chemical sedation was low-dose midazolam designed to keep her disoriented and compliant without causing permanent organ damage. Her lactation was medically sustained through prolactin stimulators so she could feed the infant. She will need three weeks of intensive nutritional rehabilitation, but both mother and child are completely out of danger."
Arthur Ross, Ethan’s senior corporate litigator for twenty-five years, laid four expandable leather folios onto the coffee table.
"The forensic trail recovered from Dr. Sterling’s home safe is catastrophic for the Vance family, Ethan," Arthur said, adjusting his glasses. "The plot was initiated in November of last year, six weeks before your father passed away."
"Show me the documents, Arthur," Ethan commanded.
Arthur rotated his tablet, displaying unsealed bank transfers, encrypted emails, and notarized corporate records.
"Item one," Arthur explained. "Eleanor Vance—Brittany’s mother—was facing sixteen million dollars in personal bankruptcy arising from her failed commercial developments in Austin. When your father’s will established that Olivia held the controlling forty percent of Cole Logistics, Eleanor and Brittany realized they could not legally access the trust unless Olivia was removed from the operational picture."
"So they staged the breakdown," Ethan said, his voice cold as arctic ice.
"They used Dr. Sterling to administer a synthetic neuro-toxic cocktail to Olivia during a private dinner in January," Arthur confirmed. "They transported her to the Cedar Hill estate while she was semi-conscious, seized her phone and laptop, and drafted the farewell email from her personal IP address. Brittany was already using the silicone prosthetic to simulate her pregnancy in Dallas social circles, timing her public delivery to match Olivia's clinical due date."
Nine-year-old Maya walked into the room, holding a small plush brown bear she had chosen from the hospital gift shop.
She walked softly to the edge of the bed, looking up at her aunt Olivia with wide, solemn eyes.
"Aunt Olivia?" Maya whispered. "I brought this for the baby."
Olivia looked up, her eyes brimming with tears of boundless gratitude. She reached out with her uninjured hand, gently touching Maya’s cheek.
"Thank you, my brave girl," Olivia whispered softly. "Your daddy told me you were the one who looked at the camera."

Maya nodded, a small, proud smile touching her lips. "I saw the magic belly disappear. Magic isn't real, but family is."
Ethan stepped to the side of the bed, placing his hands over his sister and his daughter, his soul filled with an unshakeable, sovereign resolve that would carry them through the coming fire.
