Chapter 3 - The Cold Awakening

Something inside me didn't break. It went dead, absolute, and still.

The suffocating panic evaporated. The tears stopped burning my eyes. In that precise instant, the chaotic noise of the ballroom faded away, and everything became crystal clear.

I saw the glittering chandeliers for what they truly were—cheap glass reflecting shallow people. I saw the pristine marble floor stained with innocent blood. I saw my brother's smug, arrogant posture, and my parents' hollow, empty faces.

The fog of a lifetime lifted from my mind. I finally understood the agonizing truth I had spent decades running from: I had spent my entire life begging wolves to love me, simply because we shared the same last name.

I had tortured myself trying to earn their approval, altering my choices, swallowing my voice, and accepting their endless cruelty. But wolves don't love lambs. They only wait patiently until the lamb is trapped in a corner where it cannot run.

They thought they had me cornered. They thought I would slink away into the night, humiliated, broken, and silent, carrying the blame for a crime my daughter never committed.

What Preston didn't realize...

What none of them understood in their arrogant bubble of wealth and privilege...

Was that we weren't entirely alone in that room.

Mounted quietly high above the grand double doors of the ballroom, a tiny red security light blinked steadily in the shadows. The hotel’s high-definition security camera. It had a wide-angle lens pointed directly down the center aisle, capturing every single movement, every whispered conspiracy, and every brutal strike.

Outside the heavy glass doors, the distant, rising wail of police sirens began to echo through the Chicago night—a sound summoned not by my family, but by a hotel manager who had witnessed the assault from the balcony and refused to look away.

I pulled Sophie a little tighter against my chest, ignoring the blood soaking through my dress. I lifted my chin, met my brother’s terrified gaze as he suddenly realized the sirens were getting closer, and whispered a promise into the cold air:

Your perfection ends tonight.
