Chapter 7 - The Panic in the Room

At the mention of the hotel's security cameras, the air in the ballroom shifted instantly.

The smug, arrogant color drained from Preston’s face, leaving him looking chalk-white. His eyes darted nervously upward toward the ceiling, tracking the lens of the camera above the doors. For all his meticulous planning—planting the phone, orchestrating the public shaming, counting on our parents to silence me—he had completely forgotten about the modern world's unblinking eye.

My father’s authoritative demeanor fractured. He took a sharp, agitated step toward Detective Miller.

"Now see here, Detective," my father interjected, his voice rising in panic despite his best efforts to sound composed. "There is no need to involve hotel management or pull proprietary surveillance footage over a trivial domestic misunderstanding. We are willing to drop all accusations of theft against the child. Let’s not turn a happy family celebration into a bureaucratic circus."

"A domestic misunderstanding?" Detective Miller’s voice cut through my father’s bluster like a razor. "Mr. Vance, an eight-year-old child has a severe head laceration and is currently being treated by paramedics for blunt force trauma. That is not a domestic misunderstanding. That is a felony assault."

He turned sharply to one of the uniformed officers behind him.

"Officer Davis, find the hotel manager immediately. Get me direct access to the main security control room. I want every camera angle of this ballroom from the last thirty minutes exported and secured as primary evidence."

"Right away, Detective," Officer Davis replied, turning smartly on his heel.

Panic rippled through the gathered guests. Several prominent business associates of my father began backing slowly toward the exit, eager to distance themselves from a sinking ship. My mother looked like she was about to faint, her hands flying to her chest as she stared in absolute horror at her golden son.

Preston lost all remaining composure. He lunged forward, ignoring the police officers, and pointed a trembling finger at me.

"You bitch!" Preston screamed, his aristocratic mask completely shredding. "You're ruining everything! You've spent your whole life trying to drag me down because you were always a failure! Dad, do something! Don't let them do this to me!"

My father stood paralyzed, staring at his son with a sudden, sickening realization that the monster standing before him was entirely of his own creation. Decades of unearned praise and absolute immunity had left Preston incapable of handling a single consequence.

Detective Miller didn't hesitate. He stepped forward, grabbed Preston firmly by the tailored arm of his designer tuxedo, and twisted him around, snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists with a sharp, metallic click.

"Preston Vance, you are under arrest for aggravated assault and battery of a minor," Detective Miller announced, his voice ringing clearly across the silent ballroom. "You have the right to remain silent..."
