Chapter 9 - Stepping Out of the Shadows

As Officer Davis led a handcuffed and sobbing Preston out through the grand double doors of the Whitmore Hotel, flashbulbs from paparazzi alerted by hotel staff suddenly erupted outside. The scandal of the century was breaking in real-time: Chicago’s golden boy billionaire groom arrested for brutally assaulting his niece on his wedding night.

I scooped Sophie gently into my arms, holding her close against my shoulder. She buried her face in my neck, her little arms wrapping securely around me.

"Are we going home now, Mommy?" she whispered softly.

"Yes, baby," I whispered back, kissing the top of her head. "We're going home. And we're going to start a brand new life where nobody will ever hurt you again."

As we walked down the grand marble aisle—the very same ivory runner that had been stained with her blood moments earlier—I didn't look back. I didn't look at the expensive flower arrangements, the shattered champagne flutes, or the glittering crystal chandeliers that had once seemed so intimidating.

My parents remained frozen near the head table, completely abandoned by the social elite who had spent the evening kissing up to them. Their empire of lies had finally crumbled under the weight of its own corruption.

Stepping out through the grand hotel doors, the cool Chicago night air hit my face, crisp and invigorating. The distant wail of police sirens was fading into the distance, replaced by the quiet, steady rhythm of the city breathing around us.

I looked down at my daughter, safe in my arms, and for the first time in my life, I felt truly, unconditionally free. The lambs were no longer hiding from the wolves. The wolves had finally been locked in a cage where they belonged.
