Chapter 10 - The Open Horizon

One year later.

The sun was setting over the Charleston harbor, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of bruised purple, fiery orange, and soft gold.

On the sprawling back lawn of our estate, a small, intimate gathering of fifty people was underway. There were no 180 stiff, awkward guests. No stressful seating charts. No last-minute phone calls from ex-lovers in crisis.

Just our closest friends, my supportive parents (who now treated Ethan like royalty), Rachel (who was happily engaged to one of Ethan’s senior software engineers), and an atmosphere of pure, unadulterated joy.

I stood on the wraparound porch, leaning against the white railing, wearing a stunning, elegant emerald-green silk dress—a deliberate nod to the gown Ethan had first noticed me in at that fateful gala.

Footsteps echoed softly behind me, followed by the familiar warmth of strong arms wrapping around my waist.

"Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Hayes?" Ethan murmured, resting his chin on my shoulder.

I leaned back into his embrace, looking out over the sparkling water where a fleet of sailboats drifted lazily in the distance.

"I was just thinking about how grateful I am for bad timing," I said softly.

Ethan chuckled, turning me around so I was facing him. He looked devastatingly handsome in an unbuttoned linen shirt and tailored slacks, the evening breeze tousangling his dark hair.

"Bad timing?" he raised an eyebrow. "You mean Jack?"

"I mean Jack," I smiled. "If he hadn't answered that phone call... if he hadn't made me wait for an hour while he coddled Chloe... I never would have dropped my bouquet. I never would have walked away. And I never would have found you."

Ethan’s expression softened, the hard edges of the billionaire tech titan melting away into something infinitely tender. He reached up, gently brushing a lock of hair behind my ear.

"Jack was a beta test, Lindsay," Ethan said softly, a wicked, charming smile playing on his lips. "I’m the final release."

I laughed, wrapping my arms around his neck. "And you’re completely bug-free?"

"Completely," he whispered, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that still made my breath hitch. "I love you, Lindsay. Today, tomorrow, and through every single version of the future."

"I love you too, Ethan," I replied, pulling him closer.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a final golden glow over the harbor, Ethan leaned down and kissed me. It wasn't a rushed kiss, or a staged photo-op. It was deep, passionate, and filled with the absolute certainty of a life well-won.

We didn't know what the future held. There would be new companies to build, new challenges to conquer, and new adventures waiting just over the horizon. But as I stood there in the arms of the man who had traded an empire just to claim me, I knew one thing for certain:

I would never have to wait in the margins again.
