Chapter 8 - Shadows and Whispers

The private jet cruised smoothly at 41,000 feet above the Atlantic, heading south toward the sun-drenched cliffs of the Amalfi Coast.
Inside the cabin—which looked more like a luxury penthouse suite than an aircraft, complete with leather loungers, a marble-topped bar, and ambient mood lighting—Ethan and I were relaxing with glasses of vintage Dom Pérignon.
"So," I said, resting my legs across his lap as he lazily massaged my ankle. "Tell me the truth. How long have you actually been planning to rescue me from Jack?"
Ethan paused, looking up from his tablet. A slow, knowing smile spread across his face.
"Six months, three weeks, and two days," he answered without missing a beat.
I blinked, genuinely stunned. "You're joking."
"Not even a little," Ethan said, setting his tablet aside. "The first time I saw you at the Calder annual gala, you were wearing an emerald green dress, and Jack was spending the entire evening ignoring you to talk about Q2 product margins with a regional VP. You looked miserable, but you carried yourself with an elegance that made every other person in the room look like amateurs."
"And you decided right then and there that you were going to steal me?" I teased, taking a sip of champagne.
"I decided that Jack didn't deserve you," Ethan corrected, his voice dropping an octave, turning serious and intense. "I watched him take you for granted for months. I watched him cancel dinner dates because Chloe had a minor inconvenience. I told myself that if he was stupid enough to let you walk down the aisle while still coddling his ex, I would be waiting at the finish line."
I felt a warm flutter in my chest. It was intoxicating to be looked at like that—to be valued, prioritized, and fiercely wanted by a man who commanded empires.
"Well," I murmured, leaning forward to brush my lips against his. "You timed your sprint to perfection."
Before Ethan could pull me in for a deeper kiss, the satellite phone on the cabin bulkhead chimed sharply.
Ethan frowned, pulling back slightly. He picked up the handset. "Hayes."
I watched his expression shift. The relaxed warmth vanished, replaced by the impenetrable mask of the tech titan.
"Go ahead, Sarah," Ethan said coldly.
I couldn't hear the assistant's voice on the other end, but I saw the muscles in Ethan’s jaw tighten into hard knots.
"Did she?" Ethan asked, his voice dangerously low. "Interesting. Keep monitoring the situation. Let me know if she tries anything else."
He hung up the phone and set it down with a sharp click.
"What?" I asked, the cozy atmosphere in the cabin suddenly chilling. "Was it Jack?"
"Not Jack," Ethan replied, running a hand through his dark hair. "It was Chloe."
I raised an eyebrow. "Jack’s ex? What does she possibly have to do with us now?"
"According to Sarah, after Jack was served with federal injunctions this morning, he went straight to Chloe's apartment to blame her for ruining his life," Ethan explained, his grey eyes flashing with annoyance. "Apparently, a screaming match ensued on the front lawn. The neighbors called the police. Jack was arrested for violating a temporary restraining order Chloe apparently had against *him* from six months ago."
I stared at Ethan in absolute disbelief. "Wait. Chloe had a restraining order against Jack?"
"Apparently so," Ethan sighed, shaking his head. "The man is a walking disaster area. Chloe called our PR firm ten minutes ago sobbing, claiming she was an 'innocent victim' in all of this and asking if Calder Systems could provide her with legal representation."
I burst out laughing—a loud, incredulous sound that echoed through the quiet cabin.
"You're kidding," I wheezed, covering my mouth. "She called *your* company for legal help after she blew up our wedding?"
Ethan’s severe expression finally cracked, a reluctant smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth. "She’s not the brightest bulb in the chandelier. Needless to say, Sarah told her to lose our number and hung up."
I shook my head, feeling a profound, liberating sense of closure wash over me. The ghosts of Jack and Chloe weren't just exorcised; they had imploded under the weight of their own toxic dysfunction.
"Good riddance," I whispered, lifting my champagne glass.
Ethan clinked his glass against mine, his eyes softening as he looked at me with absolute devotion.
"Good riddance," he agreed. "Now... where were we?"
May you like
He pulled me back down into his arms, and as the private jet soared ever southward toward the Mediterranean sun, the past faded away completely, leaving only the brilliant, untamed future we were building together.
