Chapter 9 - The Empire of Us

Three months later, the corporate gossip blogs had finally found a new scandal to obsess over, leaving Ethan and me in relative, blissful peace.

We had spent the last two months traveling from the Amalfi Coast to a private island in the Maldives, blending luxury vacations with high-level corporate strategy meetings where I discovered, much to my surprise, that I had a natural talent for corporate branding and product acquisition.

Today, we were back in Charleston, standing in the grand entryway of a sprawling, historic estate overlooking the Cooper River—our new home.

"Are you sure about this, Ethan?" I asked, looking up at the towering white columns, the wraparound porch, and the magnificent oak trees draped in Spanish moss. "It's massive. We could lose each other in here."

Ethan wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder as we looked out at the sun-drenched lawn.

"That's the point," he whispered against my ear. "Plenty of room for us, our future, and absolutely zero space for anyone else's drama."

I smiled, leaning back against his chest. Life with Ethan wasn't quiet, and it certainly wasn't boring. He was a force of nature—demanding, brilliant, and fiercely protective. But unlike Jack, who treated me like an inconvenient scheduling conflict, Ethan treated me like his ultimate co-founder.

"By the way," Ethan murmured, kissing my neck. "I have a surprise for you."

I turned around in his arms, raising an eyebrow. "Another surprise? Ethan, you bought me a mansion, three luxury cars, and a wardrobe that cost more than a small island nation."

"This isn't material," he smiled, his grey eyes twinkling with mischief. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a sleek, heavy cardstock portfolio.

I took it from his hands and opened it.

Inside was the official incorporation document for a brand-new tech-philanthropy foundation, designed to fund women entrepreneurs in the tech sector. And right at the top, under *Founder and Executive Director*, was my name: *Lindsay Hayes*.

I stared at the paper, my breath catching in my throat as sudden, hot tears pricked the corners of my eyes.

"Ethan..." I whispered, looking up at him. "What is this?"

"You've spent years supporting everyone else's ambitions while getting pushed to the margins," Ethan said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "It’s time you ran your own empire. You have the vision, Lindsay. I just want to provide the backing."

I threw my arms around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder as a tear slipped down my cheek. He held me tightly, his strong hands rubbing my back, making me feel safer and more cherished than I ever had in my entire life.

"Thank you," I choked out, pulling back to look into his striking eyes.

"Thank *you* for walking out of that chapel three months ago," Ethan smiled, wiping a stray tear from my cheek with his thumb. "Best executive decision you ever made."

"Second best," I corrected, a playful smirk touching my lips. "Marrying you was definitely number one."

May you like

Ethan laughed, pulling me in for a deep, lingering kiss that tasted like victory, freedom, and an endless, beautiful future.
