Chapter 2 - The Switch

The pressure of the glass against my lips was freezing, sending a shiver of pure, primal panic through my entire body. I could smell the sharp, chemical tang of the undissolved white powder—tasteless, odorless to the untrained palate, but unmistakably lethal in intent. Richard wanted me incapacitated, helpless, and completely at his mercy in an empty house while my husband was stranded hours away.

"I said, drink it, Clara," Richard hissed, his grip tightening around the base of the glass, his fingers digging into my collarbone with bruising force.

Before I could scream or knock the glass from his hand, the front security gate intercom downstairs shrieked to life with a loud, abrasive buzz.

BZZZZT!

Followed instantly by the heavy, chaotic rattling of the front porch door handle and a slurred, angry shout echoing from the entryway.

"Open the damn door! I know you're in there!"

It was Jessica, Richard’s spoiled, twenty-six-year-old daughter who had come home wasted from a late-night club excursion, demanding a drink. Jessica was notorious for her chaotic benders, often showing up uninvited when she needed money, shelter, or a scapegoat for her latest disaster.

Richard froze. The terrifying, predatory mask slipped from his face, replaced by a sudden, frantic flash of self-preservation. If Jessica caught him cornered in my bedroom at midnight attempting to force-feed me a drugged drink, his pristine educational legacy and his absolute control over the family estate would instantly shatter.

"Damn that spoiled fool," Richard muttered under his breath, his hand shaking slightly. He lowered the glass, setting it hastily onto the mahogany nightstand beside my reading lamp. "Stay in this room, Clara. Do not make a sound, or you will regret it for the rest of your life."

Without waiting for an answer, Richard spun around on his heel, pulling his silk bathrobe tight around his waist, and hurried down the hallway toward the stairs to intercept Jessica before she tore the front door off its hinges.

I sat frozen in the center of the bed, staring at the glass of orange juice gleaming ominously under the lamplight. The white powder residue at the rim drifted slightly as the liquid settled.

Downstairs, Jessica’s shrill, drunken voice pierced the quiet night.

"Where’s the booze, old man?! Don't tell me you drank it all in your dusty study! I need a drink, or I'm calling Arthur and telling him what a boring, miserable wife he married!"

"Shut your mouth, you reckless idiot," Richard’s harsh whisper echoed up the stairwell. "Come into the kitchen. I'll pour you a glass of whatever you want, just keep your voice down."

An electric surge of survival instinct detonated in my mind.

I didn't hesitate. I threw off the duvet, sprang from the bed, and grabbed the glass tumbler from the nightstand, its sides ice-cold against my palm. I crept out into the dark hallway, moving with the silent, ghost-like footfall of a hunted animal, pausing at the head of the stairs to listen.

Richard and Jessica were arguing in the kitchen alcove near the pantry.

"Give me that pitcher!" Jessica slurred loudly, snatching a heavy glass container from the counter.

I slipped down the stairs, keeping to the shadows of the wainscoting. Peering around the corner into the brightly lit kitchen, I saw Jessica leaning against the island, rummaging through the refrigerator while Richard’s back was turned as he searched the high cabinets for a bottle of scotch.

It took half a second. I stepped into the kitchen entrance, set the drugged glass of orange juice right in the center of the kitchen island within her immediate field of vision, and retreated backward into the shadows of the hallway pantry.

"Here," I called out, altering my voice just enough to sound casual. "You left your juice on the counter, Jessica."

Jessica blinked her bloodshot eyes, focused unsteadily on the glass sitting right before her, and let out a harsh, triumphant laugh.

"Well, finally, someone with some hospitality around here!" Jessica sneered.

Before Richard could turn around, Jessica grabbed the tumbler, tilted her head back, and swallowed the entire glass of spiked orange juice whole in three massive, greedy gulps.
