Chapter 4 - The Digital Witness

The darkness inside the linen closet was absolute, save for the pale, razor-thin slivers of amber light cutting through the wooden slats of the door. My lungs felt tight, restricted by the heavy wool overcoat and the suffocating heat trapped inside the small storage space. Every breath I took was slow, shallow, and controlled, terrifyingly aware that a single cough or sneeze would betray my position to the predator prowling the hallway outside.

Through the louvered slats, I watched Richard.

He didn't immediately go back downstairs to deal with Jessica’s unconscious body sprawled across the kitchen tile. Instead, he walked slowly toward the master bedroom door, pausing to run his thumb approvingly over the brass lock he had just engaged.

Then, he turned and stepped toward his own private study at the far end of the eastern wing, leaving my bedroom door locked tight and isolated from the rest of the upper level.

My hands were shaking uncontrollably as I reached into the deep pocket of my flannel pajama pants. My fingers brushed against the smooth, cold glass of my smartphone.

I pulled the phone out into the dark, shielding the screen with my palm so the sudden flash of light wouldn't leak through the closet slats. The battery icon glowed at 82%. Perfect.

With trembling thumbs, I launched the camera application, switched the setting from photo to high-definition video, and propped the phone upright between two stacked woolen blankets, aiming the camera lens directly through a wide gap in the closet louvers. The framing gave me an unobstructed, crystal-clear view of my locked bedroom door across the hall, the grand staircase landing, and the entire stretch of the upper hallway.

Rec.

The red indicator dot began to pulse softly on the screen, recording every movement in the dark, silent house.

I let out a shaky, silent breath, resting my forehead against the rough wooden shelf behind me. The physical pain in my ribs from holding such a cramped, unnatural posture for so long began to flare up, but I didn't dare move a muscle. I was no longer just a terrified victim hiding in a closet; I was securing an unalterable, ironclad digital confession.

Downstairs, the faint, muffled sound of Jessica stirring echoed up through the floor vents.

A low, groaning cough floated from the kitchen, followed by the clatter of a metal stool scraping against the tile floor. Jessica was regaining consciousness, her system fighting off the massive dose of the pharmaceutical sedative due to her high tolerance and body weight.

"Ugh... my head..." Jessica’s voice drifted up the stairwell, slurred, confused, and laced with disorientation. "Uncle Richard? What... what happened? Why am I on the floor?"

Heavy, hurried footsteps pounded up the stairs once more.

Richard materialized in my field of view through the camera lens, looking flushed, frantic, and utterly ruthless. He rushed down the hall toward the stairs, his silk bathrobe billowing behind him like the wings of a dark bird.

"Shut your trap, you miserable fool," Richard hissed as he reached the landing, grabbing Jessica by the arm—she had stumbled halfway up the stairs, looking pale and disoriented. "You drank my sleeping draught. Now you are going to pack your bags and get out of this house before I call the county sheriff and have you arrested for breaking and entering."

"You... you drugged me?!" Jessica shrieked, her voice pitching into a hysterical, piercing wail. "You poisoned me, you psychotic old bastard! I'm calling Arthur right now! I'm telling him everything!"

"Arthur is three hundred miles away, and by the time he answers his phone, you will be forty miles down the interstate," Richard snarled, using his sheer physical weight to shove Jessica backward down the stairs toward the front foyer.

The sound of their violent argument faded as Richard forced her toward the front door, unlocking the deadbolts with frantic, trembling fingers.

Click. Slam.

The heavy oak front door banged shut, followed immediately by the squeal of tires tearing out of the gravel driveway as Jessica’s car sped away into the stormy night.

Silence descended upon the house once more.

Only, this time, the silence felt heavier. More dangerous. Because Richard Sterling was now alone in the house. And his primary target—trapped behind a locked door across the hall—was supposed to be sound asleep, helpless, and completely at his mercy.
