Chapter 7 - The Unmasking

Downstairs, the heavy oak front door groaned as Arthur rattled the handle from the porch, shouting my name with mounting agitation and alarm.

"Clara! Open up! I know you're in there!" Arthur yelled, his voice echoing up the grand staircase.

Richard stood frozen in the upper hallway, the heavy iron fire poker still clutched in his trembling right hand. The sudden, unexpected arrival of his own son had completely paralyzed him, short-circuiting his predatory instincts and replacing them with a primal, suffocating dread. If Arthur walked upstairs and found his father prowling the hallway with a weapon outside a locked master bedroom, the entire web of lies would instantly collapse.

"Arthur... wait! Don't come in!" Richard called down the stairs, his voice pitching into an unnatural, forced calm that sounded horribly strained. "I'm... I'm checking the plumbing! Go around to the side entrance, son!"

"Dad? What are you doing at our house at one in the morning?" Arthur’s voice echoed back, laced with sharp suspicion. The sound of heavy keys jingling filled the foyer as Arthur bypassed the locked front door and slid his own master key into the deadbolt.

Click. Clack.

The front door swung wide open. Heavy footsteps marched across the marble foyer floor.

I knew I couldn't stay hidden in the linen closet any longer. The climax of the nightmare had arrived, and if I didn't take control of the narrative right now, Richard would twist the truth and turn my survival into my own execution.

With trembling fingers, I stopped the video recording on my smartphone, saving the file securely to my cloud storage. I slipped the phone into my pocket, pushed open the louvered doors of the linen closet, and stepped out into the upper hallway.

"Arthur! Down here!" I called out, my voice ringing clear and steady through the stairwell.

Richard spun around, his eyes bulging in sheer horror as he saw me standing unhurt in the hallway, completely out of his trap.

"Clara?!" Arthur gasped, appearing at the base of the grand staircase, looking up in sheer confusion as he dropped his duffel bag onto the foyer floor. He looked from me, standing safely on the landing, to his father standing ten feet away holding a blood-chilling iron fire poker in his bathrobe. "Dad... what is going on here? Why are you holding a weapon? What happened to your face?"

"Arthur, listen to me, your wife is insane—" Richard babbled, taking a frantic step down the stairs with his hands raised defensively, desperate to salvage his moral authority.

"Don't you dare take another step, Richard," I commanded, my voice dropping into an octave of absolute, terrifying authority that made both men freeze in their tracks.

I walked down the stairs, stopping three steps above Arthur, pulling my smartphone from my pocket. I tapped the screen, hit play on the high-definition video file I had just recorded from the linen closet, and turned the glowing screen directly toward my husband.

"Before you listen to a single word your father has to say, Arthur," I whispered, tears of adrenaline finally spilling over my lashes. "Watch the screen. And listen to the man you trusted with our lives."
