Chapter 5 - The Appointment of the Matriarch

"Mr. Cross," I stammered, setting the teacup down on the side table, my heart pounding against my ribs. "I don't understand... I have worked for your family for five years. Housekeeping is how I support my daughter—"
"You have managed the operations of this forty-room estate, coordinated thirty staff members, and kept this household running with flawless precision while raising a brilliant child on your own, Elena," Nathaniel interrupted gently.
He pulled a thick, gold-embossed leather folder from the conference table and laid it flat in my lap.
"Under the restructured bylaws of The Cross Sovereign Foundation," Nathaniel explained, "we are establishing an executive oversight board for all municipal housing and community health assets. I want you as the Executive Director and primary trustee, holding a fifteen percent voting equity in the development consortium."
I stared down at the legal charter bearing my name in elegant gold calligraphy.
"A hundred and twenty thousand dollars annual executive salary, full collegiate trust provisions for Lily at the University of Chicago, and private residential quarters in the east wing of this manor," Frank Callahan added with a warm, triumphant smile. "Nathaniel signed the appointment twenty minutes ago."
Tears pricked behind my eyelids, hot and overwhelming.
For five years, I had walked through these vast marble corridors with my eyes cast respectfully toward the floor, keeping myself invisible, swallowing the arrogance of women who treated my child like an inconvenience.
"Nathaniel... why are you doing this?" I whispered, looking up into his slate-gray eyes. "You could appoint any corporate executive in the Midwest."
Nathaniel knelt beside my chair, bringing himself down to eye level, his large, warm hand gently covering my trembling fingers.
"Because for five years, Elena," Nathaniel murmured softly, his voice rich and steady, "you were the only person in this house who told me the truth. You saw through the flattery, the fake contracts, and the greed that surrounded me. You protected your daughter with unbroken courage tonight. That is the kind of heart this empire needs."
On the sofa, Lily stirred beneath the cashmere throw, letting out a soft, sleepy sigh, her small hand reaching out in her sleep to touch Nathaniel’s sleeve.

Nathaniel looked at my daughter, a rare, breathtaking smile of profound warmth transforming his severe features.
"Go to sleep, Elena," Nathaniel whispered, standing up and brushing a stray strand of dark hair from my cheek. "Tomorrow, we take our city back."
