Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Lowell Syndicate

At nine o'clock on Monday morning, the forty-fourth floor of the Lowell Financial Center in downtown Chicago was placed under emergency federal quarantine.
The grand thirty-seat boardroom, encased in architectural glass overlooking the Chicago River, was packed with the twelve members of the board of directors, six high-priced corporate defense attorneys, and prominent high-society investors.
Arthur Lowell sat at the head of the obsidian table, dressed in a sharp bespoke pinstripe suit, his face flushed and agitated as he attempted to force an emergency liquidation vote on the commercial shipping assets.
"Gentlemen," Arthur shouted, slamming his palm onto the polished wood. "The partnership with Cross Meridian is terminated due to an irreconcilable breach of trust! We must execute the immediate transfer of the harbor leases before the state regulators intervene!"
The heavy double mahogany entrance doors of the boardroom were blown open by concussive hydraulic force.
Four armed federal marshals in tactical gear swept into the room, their badges gleaming in the morning light, followed by Special Agent Raymond Callahan and Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Reed.
Every director at the table jumped to their feet in sheer terror.
Nathaniel Cross strode into the boardroom wearing an impeccably tailored charcoal three-piece suit beneath a heavy black wool overcoat, his presence commanding immediate, breathless silence across the entire forty-fourth floor.
Walking on his right arm was I.
I wore an elegant, tailored navy wool power suit, my dark hair styled in a sophisticated chignon, carrying the red audit dossier beneath my arm with absolute, sovereign poise.
Behind us walked Frank Callahan, carrying four heavy steel cases stamped with the seal of the United States District Court.
Arthur Lowell froze, his gold pen slipping from his fingers, clattering loudly against the obsidian table.
"Cross...?" Lowell stammered, backing against his leather chair. "What is the meaning of this federal circus? This is a private board assembly!"
Frank Callahan stepped forward, slamming three thick certified probate decrees onto the center of the table with a concussive thud.
"Under emergency seizure warrants issued by Chief District Judge Evelyn Montgomery at 6:00 AM today, Arthur," Frank announced, his voice cutting through the room like a broadsword, "the Lowell Corporation is under active federal indictment for Corporate Embezzlement, Fraudulent Conveyance of Charitable Trust Assets, Digital Identity Theft, and Public Bribery."
Frank connected his tablet to the seventy-foot digital display wall.
The massive screens illuminated instantly, displaying the unedited banking flowcharts connecting Arthur and Vanessa Lowell’s offshore Bahamian accounts to fourteen million dollars in stolen foundation reserves, followed by the recorded wiretaps of Vanessa paying off the municipal building inspectors.
The boardroom erupted into furious, panicked shouts. Directors shoved their chairs back in open horror, stepping away from Arthur Lowell as if he were carrying a lethal contagion.
Arthur backed against the panoramic window, hyperventilating, his expensive veneer completely pulverized into dust. "This... this is an extortion scheme! You fabricated these records!"
Nathaniel walked slowly down the center aisle of the boardroom, stopping two feet from where Lowell stood trembling.
May you like
"You tried to steal the homes of working mothers to build luxury docks, Arthur," Nathaniel whispered, his voice dropping into a register of icy, lethal stillness. "You sent your daughter to turn my house into a criminal front. Your name is erased from this city forever."
Four federal marshals stepped forward, clicking heavy steel transport chains around Arthur Lowell’s wrists and ankles, dragging the disgraced titan from his own boardroom as the entire assembly watched in stunned, condemning silence.
