Chapter 7 - The Arrest of Vanessa

By noon that day, the second phase of the federal operation was executed at the luxury high-rise penthouse of Vanessa Lowell on Lake Shore Drive.
The television screens in the executive lounge broadcast the live footage:
Federal marshals escorting Vanessa down the building steps in handcuffs, her designer trench coat pulled over her face, her screams of hysterical rage drowned out by the flashing cameras of forty regional journalists.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcus Reed addressed the assembled media on the courthouse steps:
"Vanessa Lowell has been charged with sixteen federal felony counts, including Grand Larceny, Wire Fraud, Forgery of Sovereign Trust Documents, and Conspiracy to Defraud Municipal Housing Authorities. Bail has been denied in its entirety."
Inside the executive office on the fiftieth floor of the Cross Meridian Tower, Nathaniel and I sat with Frank Callahan and Dr. Sarah Lin, reviewing the final liquidation decrees.
"The asset forfeiture is complete, Nathaniel," Frank reported, sliding the certified deeds across the desk. "All Lowell real estate holdings in the South Side harbor district—valued at ninety million dollars—have been absorbed into the Cross Foundation under Elena’s permanent management."
I looked at the documents, feeling an immense, clean peace wash through my soul.
"What are your instructions for the property, Director Elena?" Nathaniel asked, looking across at me with an expression of deep, unshakeable pride.
I smiled, my hazel eyes bright with clear, unyielding purpose.
"Break ground on the modern community center, Frank," I replied. "Construct the pediatric health clinic, expand the green parks, and guarantee that every working family on those four blocks holds an ironclad, lifetime lease for one dollar a year."

Nathaniel leaned back in his chair, his lips curving into a warm, sovereign smile.
"Execute her orders immediately, Frank," Nathaniel commanded softly. "Every single word."
